Have we have gotten used to listening to ridiculous pronouncements from groups of people who constitute themselves to champion the cause of their group, while openly threatening the existence of others?
Have we sunk so deep as a people that we now allow those who threaten the very existence, lives and properties of millions of people to walk about freely, even having the brazen audacity to reissue and amend their threats to this country’s existence?
At no time in the history of Nigeria has there been more blatant disregard for the laws of the land, and the aloofness of those in authority from protection of the constitution of Nigeria.
But those in the know will understand what is happening, Arewa groups who issued these threats are untouchables, they cannot be arrested for an offence which other people have been detained for years for.
And why should they be bothered, they have precedence in their favor, a similar threat was issued to a group of Igbo visitors to the Oba of Lagos palace in 2015 by the Oba himself. In this case, the Oba issued an ultimatum that the Igbos must vote for a particular candidate in the gubernatorial polls or be drowned in the lagoon. Nothing happened to the Oba, he was spared because he is above the law. We were all witnesses of the scare tactics which ensured the current president won the elections in the north, we heard stories of how some northern youths were brandishing knifes and other dangerous weapons in the north, all to make the people vote for their preferred candidate.
Impunity is when people from openly commit crimes, knowing they will not be punished. That has been the problem of Nigeria. That is why the country will not grow, that is why those seeking to form a different country will continue to get popular, because there is no justice in this present arrangement.
