Nearly twelve years after she has journeyed to the world beyond, the real reasons why Former Nigerian First Lady Stella Obasanjo who died in a Spanish Hospital in October 2005 was not buried in her hometown, Iruekpen-Ekpoma have been revealed.

It is customary among Esan people in Edo State for their departed sons and daughters to be brought back to their ancestral roots for burial unless it was impossible to do so.

Two elders at Iruekpen and Eguare, both in Ekpoma, including a chief who wished to remain anonymous said "ensuring that our daughters who passed away are brought home for burial has important advantages."

"people, especially those from places unfamiliar with our custom and tradition have learnt to treat our daughters well. Nobody can expect to treat our daughters badly or even kill them and then think they would go scot-free.

"We Esan people receive strangers with open arms and ensure that we treat all strangers well; it fosters love, mutual understanding and partnership between communities, even within Esanland."

However, a reliable source who spoke with Esan People Blog maintained that the kinsmen of the deceased and elders of Iruekpen community did not raise dust over the decision of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to bury Stella in his house in Abeokuta, Ogun State because her father the patriarch of the Abebe family who himself is a respected elder in the community, would not be expected by tradition to watch his biological child being buried in his presence.

He posited that it was an abomination to have an elderly man or woman burying his or her children, so it was better to save the old man the agony of such experience.

Although, people had speculated that the Ex President "bought" the consent of Iruekpen elders with money and had Stella buried in Abeokuta, our source revealed that the question of where to bury Stella was the least issue that bordered the minds of family members and relatives as they were too shattered and devastated by the news of her sudden death to bicker with Obasanjo over where the former First Lady would be laid to rest.

you can bury anywhere from the home if you fulfil the requirements the family gives

You can't do it without their consent, yes obasanjo fulfilled such for his love for Stella and got his wish

trust me I know esan tradition

What you said is true but what I am saying is that it is possible if the family give approval.

I have seen a child who loved his mum so well and asked the family instead of taking her to her parents house (who weren't alive) he would want her in his own house but you must be first son to do that

The family would give you list of what to do so that the ansectors won't worry you in breaking tradition
