StOla: May God increase you in knowledge and understanding. That's a Yoruba man for you. Not just blabbing but talks with facts and nothing but actual facts. No doubt we Yorubas are the envy of others. Cos our ways are purely diff. We take time to listen, read, comprehend, and understudy and understand. We are naturally psychologists we see beyond our noses, we are knowledgeable, we have highest degree of understanding and wisdom to harness, to give and to take/ blocked tactically. We are blessed naturally with foresights and taking decisions as time demands. with fear of God. And finally the God we serve never leaves us alone. He always make us to have our ways in Nigeria and beyond. Awo' of blessed memory is the reason for a united nation called Nigeria today. Peace be on him. Tinubu is another Hero (Yoruba Genius) that single handedly ousted an incumbent national govt. (Peace be on Him). If it is a Yoruba* man that is in position of Mbuhari* now, he would have honorably resign and respect himself. Cos we value respect a lot. And we don't joke with our self esteem. We are not cowards. It still baffles me why our eastern brothers find it difficult to learn from us and tackle their problems tactically without much ado about nothings. I will see you later. Make I drink water. 4 Likes 1 Share |

I will forever be grateful to he average Yoruba man on the street for being so detribalized that they voted Zik into office. The average Yoruba man is a progressive. A true progressive. If we want progress in this country, we must copy the average Yoruba man who voted Zik into office in 1951. Unfortunately his mandate was denied him by political maneuvers. |

igbodefender: Will you shut your thrash? Who voted in Zik and which mandate was he denied of? The fact that your stupid Zik already expected the minority's parties such as the ibadan people party etc to lick his ass instead of him going over to them to canvass for their support like Awolowo did doesn't negate the fact that Awolowo won the election on a fair ground! You can go and die if that simple logic is giving you a headache! It's no different from how your stupid Ojukwu and now, Kanu eediot already decided for the SS minorities in your stupid biafra dream rather than canvass for their support and when they eventually denied you of such dream, you would scream betrayal and tribalism. StOla:What are you talking about US education?by 1934 Zik had returned to Naija after going thru US schools like Howard University, Columbia, Licoln University and UPenn. Awolowo started his UK higher education in 1944.. So who had a better understanding of Naija and global events?? Why did Awo AG lead to total break down of law and order in the SW? It was under his leadership that state of emergency was declared in the s/west? Zik was a governor general before becoming a president. Awo was only a federal-appointed minister serving at the pleasure of the prime minister. In 1964 elections, AG led by Awo came 4th by winning 21 seats. NCNC led by Zik came 2nd by winning 84 seats. How could Awo have offered PM position to Zik when Northern People's Congress had won 162 seats? Is math your problem? 24 is not greater than 84 or 162!! You dont offer what you dont have! 24 +84 =108! You dont need to rewrite history here! |

BigIyanga: How does timing of foreign study erase the fact that one studied in a country whose political system was different to Nigeria's, while the other studied in a country whose political system was the model for which Nigeria's was structured? Awolowo was leader of opposition at the federal parliament, not an appointed minister/federal commissioner of a ruling coalition he did not belong to. He only became a federal minister under the Gowon regime. Your 1964 election results that you stated, does it take precedence over the 1960 elections for which the NCNC and AG could have formed a majority alliance government with NCNC being the senior partner? Instead, Azikiwe went the way of the North as a junior partner in 1960 when he could have been senior partner in an NCNC/AG alliance, only to regret and align with an already federally castrated Action Group in the 1964 elections that proved woeful to both partners. 1 Like 1 Share |

BuariCopyPaste: Unongo can be a rabble rouser sometimes, but a point of correction, his relevance was minimal in the fight for independence. Two, his thoughts are confusing, he said Awolowo was the strongman of Yoruba politics and at the same time, he said Awo was unknown by many Yoruba people. Third, people never considered the issue that Zik who was the party leader mishandled the politics of the Western region, NCNC had good support in most cities but they were less relevant in the small towns and villages, a lot of NCNC leaders in the west came from city elites. even in 1950, NCNC still had a sizable support in Shagamu and Ikenne, Awo's base, I think up to 1949, the area was majority NCNC. NCNC lost the election because they taught they deserved to be voted instead of fighting for votes, they easily could have won the west. AG's campaign aroused the interest of those in the villages, small towns and those who felt that their position in life will rise as a result of AG's policies. It is because Nigeria's intellectual discourse is rigged by tribalism is what led a lot to believe Zik was a great leader, he was likely not, Ahmadu Bello dusted him in leadership qualities(motivating the ppl to vote for party) and Awo dusted him in the west. On tribalism, I think Zik lost because he was not in control of the Ibadan politicians. 2 Likes |

Diademk07:You are obviously too uneducated to know even the rudimentary differences between a presidential system and a parliamentary system. The worst category of fools on earth are the ones who don't know and don't know that they teacher now, so they get busy boldly saying things that even those on his team would shudder at. You, boy fall sadly in that obnoxious category. When you go to school today, boy, ask your government teacher( if you have one ) to explain the differences between presidential and parliamentary systems of government. Maybe you would then begin to see how stupid and silly the premises of your argument have been. When children are told to concentrate when teacher is teaching, they will instead be playing with rubber. That's your biggest problem. Please, stop wasting your school fees if you hope to be a leader of tommorow. Smh at bad mannered itk kids. |

That is y I get surprised wen Awo's name is consistently being used as example of a nationalist....We shud use the right examples for upcoming generations.. .If Awo is a nationalist, then majority of Nigerians are, based on his own brand of nationalism... Of the three founding fathers, only Zik was a nationalist...Others were all for their tribes 1 Like |

StOla:You have a tenous relationship with the truth! In 1960, elections were held in S/W and AG got 54% of the vote with 79 seats while NCNC got 36% of the vote with 33 seats . In 1961, elections were held in the east, NCNC got 58% with 106 seats while AG got 14% with 15 seats. So AG won 94 seats in SW/E while NCNC got 142 seats in SW/E.. so who should be the king maker? Zik came 2nd while Awo came 3rd. Awo had always been beaten by Zik in those days. I noticed how tactifully ignored the fact that Awo lost 52 seats in 1964 elections and NCNC made huge gains. Awo's AG was the first political party to be embroiled in crisis and banned. His leadership invited FG to declare state of emergency in the SW. Zik was in the graduating class of 1933 while Awo was in the graduating class of 1948. Zik had practised and delivered results in Naija politics before Awo. How could awo have known better than Zik? Zik played politics of live and let live while Awo played politics of highhandness and exclusion of dissenting views.. Lives and properties were lost under Awo's leadership. |
Re: Nigeria’s Problems Started With Awo’s Introduction Of Tribal Politics — Unongo by StOla: 8:13am On Jun 29, 2017 |
BigIyanga: Dude, you are just revolving around statistic that is irrelevant to the fact you want to disprove. NCNC and AG had the 2nd highest and 3rd highest seat tally in the federal elections to form a government in 1960. The NPC that had the highest number of seats did not have an exclusive majority. As such they needed to align with either AG or NCNC to prevent an AG/NCNC alliance that would surpass the seat tally of NPC. NCNC thus became a junior partner to NPC when same NCNC could have been senior partner to AG, with Zik by virtue of being the NCNC leader, becoming the Prime Minister. You put a lot of blame on Awo's leadership as the cause of trouble in the West. Was it leadership from prison? Or you blame a man who had been craftily sidelined and dumped in prison by the federal government that Azikiwe was an integral partner? Or did the federal government not craftily install Akintola's NNDP as the party of government in the Western Region while Awolowo was in jail? Or you expect the AG to have made gains in 1964 while being actively decimated by the NNDP who had federal backing of terror, and core leaders in jail already? I repeat, Awo flogged Zik on every political debate starting from the NYM elections, the Western Region government Premiership, the constitutional debates and in retrospect Awolowo has been proved right and Zik proved wrong with such colosal consequences, especially to his own people. Even up to the civil war debates in the Organization of African Unity, Zik's arguments to get backing for Biafra was roundly defeated by Awo's arguments on behalf of the federal government. Awo understood the system Nigeria was practicing and I maintain that the different political systems both were exposed to while studying abroad was a factor, regardless of who was graduating earlier or not. Exposure is exposure, that I graduated first in English doesn't make me knowledgeable in Law. Or how do explain that till today, nobody from the NCNC leadership could produce the list of their members who they claimed won 1951 elections in the Western Region, but decamped to secure Awolowo the majority? AG had their contesting members published in the newspapers then and new exactly the nimber of seats they had won with specific names of those candidates who won and lost. This allowed them to easily go into alliance with other independents that Azikiwe had reasoned foolishly were going to align with his own party. Do you remember how David Cameron became Prime Minister in the UK? Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party had a Majority that wasn't exclusive. While concluding that the Liberal Democrats would agree to some bread crumbs concessions being offered by Labour Party to form a government, the 2nd placed Conservative Party of David Cameron offered Nick Clegg of the Lib Dems the Deputy Prime Minister's position and other mouth watering concessions. While Gordon Brown was dreaming to start his own full term in office as Prime Minister having concluded the last 2yrs of Tony Blair's 3rd term, David Cameron and his own party were actually forming a government that was not a dream. 3 Likes |
