The act of watching pornography is no more a question of whether it is morally wrong or right, the effect it can have on the life of the individual engaging in it is horrifying.

It has been scientifically proven that pornography can be addictive as drugs or alcohol and it is very damaging to the brain. A quick search of phrases like “how porn affects the brain” will show you a lot of research that have done on this subject.

One of the main known negative effects of porn on men is Erectile Dysfunction (ED). This simply means inability to get or maintain an erection during sex, and this can lead to some embarrassing sex experience. This, according to research, is due to physical and biochemical changes in the brain as a result of over indulgence on porn. A quick search for “porn induced ED” will throw more light on that.

Other major effects of porn on an individual are:

Numbed Pleasure Response (Desensitization). In a simple terms, this means that porn leads to more porn which leads to even more porn and the deeper you go into it the harder it becomes to stop.

Hyper-reactivity to Porn (Sensitization). This means that every other thing around becomes boring except porn.

Willpower Erosion (Hypofrontality). This means that the part of the brain that is responsible for logic reasoning and decision making (pre-frontal cortex; often regarded as the CEO of the brain) get diminished with more porn usage and this result to decreased willpower. You might find yourself doing stupid things after stupid things.

There are many other known effects of porn which are more specific to individuals rather than being general. This includes concentration problem, memory lost, brain fog, diminished creative ability, anxiety, depression, isolation, blurry eye vision, and many more.

The Good News…
For those that may already be into this, the good news is that healing is possible, thanks to the plasticity nature of the brain. Research has shown than abstaining from pornography for about 3 – 12 months (depending on the individual) will return the brain back to normal. But the problem is that quitting is not as simple as saying “I quit” if you are already addicted to this. You may need to seek help to be able to get out of it.

OP, nice points. I believe porn addiction, weed addiction, alcohol addiction, masturbation addiction have similar effects on the mind. However it takes longer than you mentioned for recovery. Mine took eighteen months. Remember post acute withdrawal syndrome takes many months to two years.
