HOW ELECTIONS SHOULD BE CONTESTED TO ENSURE UNITY IN NIGERIA !


(This format will henceforth be called THE DUKE' FRAMEWORK).



In other to put an immediate end to the perennial and lingering issues of Nigerians being treated like foreigners in Nigeria by not being allowed to contest for election despite residing and contributing to the growth and development of their state of residency, the following steps should now come into force;


1.
Every Nigeria must be free to live and contest in any state they live in, as long as they have resided there for at least 2years and paid their taxes.


2.
The directive to "go and contest in your state", should be expunged from our political system.


3.
Each state should produce only 75% of the candidates in both State and Local Government elections.


4.
Each of the six geopolitical zones should produce 5% of the candidates in both State and Local Government elections.


5.
Each State government should keep 75% of all political appointments (like commissioners & others), and give 5% to each of the six geopolitical zones.


6.
The INEC should decide which of the state and Local Government seats that will be contested for by the non-indigenes by a simple method of open lottery amongst the various seats. This can be done by adding all the seats for the state Assembly and Local Government in two separate boxes and the first six picked will then be contested for by the so-called non-indigenes.


7.
The INEC should ensure that there is a very fair and even distribution of contestants through due and delicate diligence and verification that those who presented themselves for elections are truly from the zones in the country they claim to come from.


8.
The governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives elections can still be 'reserved' to only state indigenes for now until it can be re-appraised in the very near future.

If we as Nigerians know that the law allows us to contest for elections where we reside, as foreigners in the land, we are very more likely to become more productive towards our local communities in other for the locals to see us as purveyors of development, and may likely support us during elections.


The beauty of this system is that all the candidates from the six geoppolitical zones will be involved in both local and state politics and governance. No Nigerian will have any reason to feel like a foreigner again in any part of Nigeria.


The DUKE' FRAMEWORK will reduce the influence of the OPC, AREWA, IPOB & MASSOB, as well as the NIGER-DELTA agitators.


The DUKE' FRAMEWORK is very workable if we truly want the much talked about integration between every ethnic nationality in Nigeria.
