Dambazau made no direct reference to the absence of Yar'Adua, but did speak about unrest in the central city of Jos.
Christian leaders have accused the military of deploying predominantly Muslim soldiers to quell the violence and have called for an investigation of what they say were targeted killings, according to local newspaper reports.
"We ,  noted that some persons who apparently do not value peace are hell-bent on creating disaffection between the military and the public, particularly with reference to the Jos crisis," Dambazau said.
"We want to state categorically that in the Nigerian army our religion is esprit de corps, while our tribe is the military profession and our training has placed us above primordial sentiments," he said.

You made a promise to provide the link and I am simply holding you to that promise.

Your insults are noted but would not drag myself down to your level.

Meanwhile, you can do good by sticking to the issue at hand, which you yourself raised and so far cannot substantiate.

May I remind you again that NLders are WAITING !

I have given the link already, but not being one to cooperate with elements i consider draconian i'd never do it at your request. "Nairalanders" who already now know of the story don't need me to take them to the nationonline website to read the story(and even delving further if needed), one of the little aptitudes educated people polish up in school.

Christian elders in Plateau State alleged yesterday that soldiers took sides in the Jos riots.

Amidst mounting fears and suspicion in Jos, members of the Plateau State Christian Elders’ Forum (PSCEF) called on the Federal Government and the international community to investigate the role of "mischievous soldiers" in the orgy of violence.

Although the Army told our correspondents in Abuja yesterday that it is impossible for soldiers to be involved in the killing of innocent citizens, especially when the Chief of Army Staff is supervising the operations, the PSCEF insisted that such killings took place.

In a statement entitled: "Nigerian soldiers are perpetuating genocide in Jos city", PSCEF’s Secretary-General Dr. Musa Pam and its National Coordinator, Bishop Bok Andersen, insisted that investigations would prove that their allegations are not frivolous.

The elders said: "With the religious crisis in Plateau State entering its fourth day, we are sad to announce that the real culprits that have been killing our Christian brethrens are Nigerian soldiers. At the instance of the Federal Government, the military were deployed to calm tempers in the state but our findings have shown that some of these soldiers disguised themselves by wearing white canvass with military uniforms as a decoy so that they will be mistaken for fake soldiers.

"These soldiers have killed hundreds of innocent citizens in Chwelnyap, Jos North and Angwan Doki in Bukuru, both popular Christian communities in Jos city.

"We condemn this genocide against Christians by Nigerian soldiers in Jos and hereby call on the Federal Government and the international community to investigate these activities of those who have sworn to protect the integrity of the nation and our defenceless citizens.

"It is also amazing that these mischievous elements in the Nigerian Army who pretend to be ‘fake’ have entered these communities, breaking into homes of the helpless and defenceless citizens, evacuating them and shooting them sporadically. Our hearts weep for what is happening here, which we believe is being sponsored by some dubious elements in the name of religion.

"But should they use a government agency like the military? Is this another Odi or Zaki Biam? In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call on the Federal Government to intervene and stop this mischief by its agents called the Nigerian soldiers."

But Director of Army Public Relations Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade pleaded for understanding and reflection on the Army’s position, adding that it is extremely unfair for anyone in Plateau to try to drag soldiers into an "unnecessary controversy".

"It cannot be true; rather, the involvement of the Nigerian Army has helped in bringing the situation to a state of near normalcy. It will be unfair to accuse the army of involvement in such heinous acts. I am just coming back from Jos and the residents have been commending the Nigerian Army for doing an excellent job in the protection of lives and property.

"We have been doing our job in the most professional way and we believe that it is extremely unfair for anyone to consider dragging our name into any controversy; we are appealing that no one should drag us into any controversy. I am just returning from Jos this evening and the Chief of Army Staff was personally there today.

"Everybody in Plateau State and elsewhere, including the Plateau State government, has been commending the Nigerian Army for its efforts; so, we are surprised that anyone can make such allegations," Gen. Olukolade said.

Jos, the Plateau State capital seized by four days of violence, was struggling yesterday to recover from the hangover.

More than 3,000 displaced persons are taking refuge at the Bukuru Police Division and a mosque in the town.

NAN reports that the displaced persons were those whose homes were destroyed during the skirmishes.

A cleric in the area, Mallam Ahmed Mohammed, said that women and children were evacuated to the area for protection.

He said that food, drugs, mats and blankets were needed to protect the victims from hunger, cold and diseases.

The Plateau Specialist Hospital, which has been treating the injured since the outbreak of the crisis, is reportedly running out of drugs.

A pharmacist in the hospital, Mr Moses Ayuba, told NAN that the hospital was using the last batch of consignments.

He called on the Federal Ministry of Health to come to the aid of the state, even as the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Pam Danlong, welcomed assistance from individuals and organisations, for the victims.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ogbonna Onovo, described the damage from the Jos crisis as "substantial".

He told newsmen after inspecting the ruins at the flashpoints, that it was unfortunate the crisis took place at all, but was consoled with the timely deployment of police and soldiers who contained it.

Onovo visited Congo-Russia, Dutse Uku, Bukuru, Rikkos, Nasarawa Gwong and Bisichi where fires were still smouldering.

The Inspector-General said he would direct investigation into the claim that some men appeared in army uniform to unleash terror on citizens during the crisis.

More soldiers are being deployed, with the arrival of two lorry-loads of soldiers from outside the city.

Some starving residents in Jos have defied the 24-hour government curfew imposed since Tuesday, as they say they can no longer tolerate the attendant hunger and thirst.

"These soldiers have killed hundreds of innocent citizens in Chwelnyap, Jos North and Angwan Doki in Bukuru, both popular Christian communities in Jos city.

"We condemn this genocide against Christians by Nigerian soldiers in Jos and hereby call on the Federal Government and the international community to investigate these activities of those who have sworn to protect the integrity of the nation and our defenceless citizens
