Former Skye bank Manager, Tajudeen Yusuf, who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, 29th of June, 2016 for fraud was given a fine of a hundred thousand naira after being convicted by Federal High Court in Jos.

The convict who was arraigned before the before Justice Ambrose Alagwa of the Federal High Court, Jos, rose to infamy when a petition was released from Skye Bank Nigeria Plc, Jos branch, alleged that Yusuf fraudulently collected the sum of N200 million from the bank’s customer, Alhaji Usman Tetengi and issued him with fake deposit certificate as bank evidence.

Tajudeen thereafter allegedly diverted the N200m to his personal use while all efforts to recover the funds proved abortive.

According to a report from the Premium Times, Two of the five count charges levelled against him were directly related to the fraud, with the defendant pleading not guilty to all charges.

After over two years of prosecution, Justice Ambrose Alagwa Justice Alagwa discharged and acquitted the convict on three counts but found him guilty on two counts, sentencing him to six months imprisonment on each of the counts.

He however gave him the option of paying N100,000 fine.

Pertinent questions should be which charges was he acquitted for?
Which charge did he get the 6months or option of fine?

How sure are you that the judge didn't go for the minimum sentence? In this case, I can bet it that he didn't go for the maximum sentence. Even if the accused has been found guilty for the five counts, the sentence would have remained the same. No be today now.

The problem is not just the judiciary as many claim, it is the CONSTITUTION. The judge must have given that penalty based on what is available in the laws of the land.

We have said it several times that the law encourages corruption because the penalties attached are just a slap in the back; so petty.
Our senators whose job it is to make and amend such laws will not touch it with a long pole, because they are rogues and Number 1 beneficiary of corruption. That is why we have massive daylight corruption in high places and nobody can stop it.

If we had stiffer penalties, corruption would reduce a great deal.

Hence our problem is OUR SNATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES.

And you are a typical example of that unfortunate situation.

You're right, govt has probably gone on the plea bargaining route.
However, its still fraught with massive irregularities. In a plea bargain, the case goes to court, the defendant still pleads guilty to one or more charges (maybe less horrendous ones, but still), still get convicted, only to serve a lighter punishment. e.g 10 years in prison instead of 12.
