This article will reveal 13 of the best ways to repel mosquitoes so you can enjoy a mosquito free summer!

1. Dry Ice

Dry ice emits a lot of carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. So, all you have to do is place dry ice in a container and keep it at a certain distance away from you. When all the mosquitoes are attracted to the container and are inside it, just close the lid. This method might be a little time-consuming, it is quite effective.

2. Camphor

Camphor is a white (sometimes transparent) flammable solid obtained from the wood of the evergreen tree camphor laurel. It has a strong aromatic odor that insects can stand. It purifies your surrounding area by repelling insects including mosquitoes.

3. Coffee Grounds

This is a really simple, yet effective method to getting rid of mosquitoes. Just sprinkle coffee grounds wherever you find still water near your home. The mosquito eggs present in the water will be forced to the surface and will be deprived of oxygen. This will kill them before they are hatched and prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

4. Make a mosquito trap at home

You can make a mosquito trap right at home and get rid of mosquitoes without any difficulty. This trap uses sugary water and yeast that attract the mosquitoes. The sugary water is placed in a bottle that has a narrow opening through which the mosquitoes enter the bottle but are unable to get out. They stick inside the bottle having sugary water.

5. Garlic

Garlic has a very strong smell, which mosquitoes really don’t like. Just crush a few cloves of garlic and boil it in some water for a few minutes. Then, pour the solution into a spray bottle and squirt it all around the room. This will kill the mosquitoes.

6. Homemade Mosquito Repellant

If you are fed up of the chemical laden mosquito repellants, why not try making a repellant right at home! While you get herbal mosquito repellants such as Lemon oil or eucalyptus sprays, you don’t actually know whether they are really herbal or not. If you want to be 100 percent sure about the absence of any harmful chemicals in your mosquito repellant, make this one all by yourself.

7. Dish Soap

This one is really easy. Just squirt a mixture of dish soap and water on the mosquitoes to kill them naturally.

8. Coffee can help you get rid of mosquitoes

Many researches in the past few years have established the effectiveness of coffee in getting rid of mosquitoes, especially the species Aedes albopictus, or the Asian tiger mosquito can be effectively controlled by coffee. However, other species of mosquitoes have also been successfully eliminated using coffee during research studies. When you use coffee to eliminate mosquitoes, you hamper the growth of the larvae and thus the mosquito population is killed off. In fact, one of the studies has suggested that coffee can actually act as a deterrent and is able to keep the mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Wherever there is stagnant water around your house that you cannot clean off, just sprinkle coffee grounds over such stagnant water.
You may also dissolve some coffee in very low amount of water and keep them in bowls inside your house, like patio or deck. When mosquitoes feed on this aromatic liquid, they will not be able to lay eggs.
9. Beer

Just fill a bowl with plain beer and place it in your home to repel mosquitoes.

10. Use Neem to get rid of mosquitoes

In India, neem (Indian lilac) is used since ages for various medical purposes due to its effective anti-bacterial properties. It is, in fact, used as a natural insecticide too. Now various research studies have also proved that neem oil can be an effective organic mosquito repellant. Use neem in the following ways to get rid of mosquitoes.

11. Lilac Oil and Coconut Oil

Lilac has so many great qualities. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, and also has anti-protozoan properties. To get rid of mosquitoes, mix lilac oil and coconut oil in an even ratio and apply it all over your body. This will keep mosquitoes away from you for a minimum of eight hours.

12. Citronella repels mosquitoes

Citronella oil is a natural insect repellent. This oil is obtained from distilled oils of different grass. The main components of this oil, namely, citronellol, citronellal and geraniol seem to be the magic ingredients that repel mosquitoes. During a research study at the University of Guelph in Ontario, candles were made using 3% concentration of citronella oil. These citronella candles reduced mosquitoes by 42%. Why is this oil so effective? It is because it masks the human scent which attracts the mosquitoes along with the carbon dioxide released during exhalation.

13. Basil

If you plant basil in your garden and put a few potted basil plants around your home, mosquitoes won’t come near you.

14. Mint also helps to keep mosquitoes away

Along with using the carbon dioxide trail to locate a human being, mosquitoes also smell the scent of human skin. That’s why they can perfectly land on our exposed skin. This means mosquitoes have advanced smelling sense. This has been proved by research too. Therefore, we can surround ourselves with such strong smells that are not liked by the mosquitoes. Mint is one of such smells. Use it in different ways to get rid of mosquitoes.

15. Citronella Oil

This oil is the most effective when it comes to getting rid of mosquitoes. Apply it all over your body, or put a few drops of it in a candle when lighting it. Mosquitoes won’t come near you at all.

16. Pinion Wood

Burn this wood outside your home, and the odor that it releases will prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

17. Make herbal spray to get rid of mosquitoes

Catnip plant is a natural mosquito deterrent. Nepetalactone is the essential oil found in catnip which drives away the mosquitoes. While you can always plant catnip around your place, you can also use it to make a herbal mosquito spray to deter them away. Rosemary is the other herb that has been used in this spray. This aromatic herb is also a deterrent for mosquitoes.

18. DIY scented mosquito repellant spray

If you enjoy the smell of aromatic oils, you can use them to make a mosquito spray. However, use those oils that are not liked by mosquitoes. Add one or two essential oils that have anti-bacterial properties. Mix them with a carrier oil and you have self made aromatic mosquito repellant spray in your hands.

19. Basil-Vodka Mosquito Repellant Spray

Many people find the combination of basil herb and vodka to be more effective than commercially available DEET mosquito repellents. Basil has always been an effective anti-parasitic herb and it repels mosquitoes too. Vodka is composed usually of ethanol and water. The commercially available mosquito repellants also use organic alcohol like ethanol as a solvent. It dilutes the active ingredient to the desired concentration and also helps in keeping all of the raw materials mixed properly. It is also helpful if you want to keep the solution useful for long storage purpose.

20. Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Getting rid of standing water will cut down the number of mosquitoes in the immediate vicinity. Standing water can include bird baths, puddles and pet water bowls. Make sure gutters are draining well and empty any garden items that collect water.

21. Make A Mosquito Trap

A homemade mosquito trap is another way to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area. This trap uses CO2 to attract mosquitoes into a soda bottle from which they can’t escape.

22. DAB EUCALYPTUS OIL

According to research, lemon eucalyptus oil is a very effective mosquito repellent. This essential oil is available in drug stores and must be used sparingly as a natural, mosquito repelling perfume.

23. PLANT HERB GARDENS

Herbs are natural mosquito repellents. Growing basil, mint and sage helps create a mini kitchen for your home while also affecting their breeding.

I grew up seeing my parents planting lemon grass round the house and it also repels ants and though its used for native malaria treatment.
Grind lemon grass and use the paste to cover ur skin you will see that mosquito's don't land on your skin so it goes to say lemon grass is effective in repelling mosquitoes
