It originated from Latin “sapere” meaning “to be wise” and it became an English word by way of middle French “savoir” meaning “to know.”

Sapient meaning “having great wisdom” and sage meaning “possessing and showing wisdom through experience or reflection,” share root with savant.

Savant also refers to a person who has exceptional knowledge in a particular subject, or in performing a particular task but has limited capacities in other areas.
