PALPABLE anxiety mounts in the hitherto restive Niger Delta, as prominent indigenes of the area appear to be under close surveillance by the security apparatus of the country.

This followed heightened pressure from some Nigerians and groups that President Umaru Yar'Adua, who had been in Saudi Arabia for more than eight weeks on health grounds, transmits a letter to the National Assembly, to empower Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to act as president.

Curiously, the groundswell of pressure, until recently, had come from the civil society as well as regions other than the South-South, Jonathan's home front.

Lately, prominent leaders from the South-South, especially former information minister and Ijaw national leader, Senator Edwin Clark, under the South-South elders' forum, with ex-militants had joined the vanguard for adherence to the nation's constitution.

A member of the forum, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity in a telephone interview, said he had observed that his line had been bugged by unknown persons.

Coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG), Joseph Evah, alleged that some governors in the region were responsible for the development.

The source, a retired and highly respected personality in the nation's security circles, called with a number different from his when the Nigerian Tribune sought some clarifications over the current political logjam occasioned by the absence of the president.

" I can tell you that in the last one or two weeks, there have been a lot of terrible things happening that are ordinarily very needless; the reason why I refused to pick your calls was because of such things but I am not afraid at all, because what is bad has no other name," the source stated.

Putting the blame on the governors from the region, Evah said their actions, since the constitutional debacle, were to the effect that they would stop at nothing to stop Jonathan from being made acting president.

Meanwhile, security of lives and property of foreign nationals in the Niger Delta may no longer be guaranteed, as a pro-democracy group, Network of Freedom Fighters in Niger Delta (NFF), on Wednesday, threatened to resume attacks on oil installations in the region if Jonathan is not sworn in as the acting president.

Rising from its meeting, the group warned the Federal Government, saying that its decision was not an empty threat.

The group, in a communiqué signed by its coordinator and secretary, Nengi James and Kofi Moses respectively and made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Yenagoa, advised the foreign nationals to, in their own interest, close their business operation for now.
