President Umaru Yar ‘Adua’s Principal Secretary, David Edevbie, is stuck in Dubai, striving hard, but unable to get clearance to see his boss in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Presidency sources have said.

He left Abuja en-route Jeddah, via Dubai, early last week but got a rude shock when he called Presidential aides in Jeddah to inform them that he was on a stopover in Dubai but was immediately told not to bother himself.

One of his colleagues said in Abuja that, “David brought this on himself, he had no one to impress, he should not have gotten into this thing.” He however dismissed mounting rumours in Abuja that Mr. Edevbie has fled the country, and jumped boat in the face of a sinking Yar’Adua Presidency, describing that as, “all wicked and totally irresponsible lies.”

Stopped in his tracks

Mr. Edevbie’s trip was reportedly aborted by the First Lady, Turai Yar ‘Adua, who also turned down a proposal from Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, to visit the president. Mrs. Yar ‘Adua has lately grown grouchy and anxious, according to knowledgeable presidency sources.

Against the background of the Edevbie-Sultan rebuff, it is unclear what fate lies ahead for three other planned trips to visit the President on his sick bed this week.

The National Working Committee of the ruling People’s Democratic Party [PDP] made up of the principal officers of the party, who are about the most loyal Yar’Adua people in the political arena today, say they are also sending a delegation this week. They took time to plead with an increasingly irritated senate bent on impeaching Mr. Yar’Adua last Thursday, and asked for a one-week window to obtain a letter from him to transmit power to his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan.

The President’s adviser on National Assembly Matters, Mohammed Abba-Aji, also told the Senate last week that although he lacked access to the president, he believed that Mr. Yar’Adua will transmit his letter of vacation to the Senate in the week.

Presidency sources were emphatic at the weekend that the letter Mr. Aji spoke about was unrelated and had nothing to with Mr. Edevbie’s trip.
