MEN of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended a 43-year-old man, Oladipupo Olalekan, who specialises in selling human parts to ritualists for money making rituals. The suspect was paraded along some suspects by the Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State recently.

The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Musa Daura, told Crime & Security that the suspect was arrested following a tip off by a vigilant citizen who saw the suspect with human skulls.

“On the 18 January, 2010, at about 11.50 p.m., one Mustapha Ibrahim of Agura Road, Sabo, Sagamu, reported at Sagamu Police Station that he received information from one man called Taiwo that a man was caught with a human head which he excavated at Atoyo burial ground, Agura area of Sagamu. The suspect was arrested and taken to Sagamu police station. The suspect accused one Ifatunji Shoyeba as one of the receivers of human parts.”

Police sources informed Crime & Security that there has been upsurge in cases of people dealing in human parts. “You see, there has been an increase in cases of people invading burial grounds to excavate human parts for money making rituals. In fact, we record cases of people caught with human parts on weekly basis.”

A police source lamented that some of the suspects caught didn’t even see being caught with human parts excavated from burial grounds as a crime. Crime & Security in an interview with the suspect, Oladipupo Olalekan stated that he decided to be visiting burial grounds based on the agreement he had with the buyers that they would be paying him handsomely for supplying human parts.

“My name is Oladipupo Olalekan. I am 43 years old. I am from Ikenne in Ogun State. I relocated to Sagamu when things became very tough for me. I get human parts from various burial grounds in Sagamu and the second suspect, one Ifatunji Shoyesa is one of my buyers,” he said.

On the mode of operation, the suspect told Crime & Security that “it is not an easy thing. I normally perform some rituals to appease the spirits of the dead before going out in the night. It is important and compulsory to perform the rituals so as not to incur the wrath of the dead. I usually invade the place (burial ground) to get human parts. We don’t do it during the day because people will challenge us. At times, I meet other people doing one or two things there.”

“You see, some big men always visit the place (burial ground) in the night to perform one ritual or the other. Some may be doing the ritual at the place for money or to get political power.

On how he was caught by the police, he said: “On that fateful day, I had already concluded my assignment at the burial ground and I was on my way home when a man accosted me and asked me to open the bag I was carrying. I was caught and the police was invited.”

On why he decided to be disturbing the dead he said: “Things were very tough for me financially. I discussed with some herbalists and they said I should be supplying human parts. A skull goes for N4,000 (four thousand naira) on the average. I made about N16,000 (sixteen thousand naira) in a month selling human parts.”

However, a hot argument broke out between the suspects – the supplier and the buyer, the alleged receiver of the human parts, Ifatunji Shoyeba, denied ever doing any business with the accused (Oladipupo Olalekan).

He agreed that he had met Oladipupo before, but, denied ever getting into any agreement with him. Speaking on the matter, the commissioner of police, Mr. Daura, said the two suspects would soon appear in court.

In another development, a team of police detectives attached to the anti-human trafficking section of Ogun State police command has arrested members of a three-man-child trafficking syndicate operating in the state.

The police sources at the police command told Crime and Security that the suspects –Akpo Mathew, Akpo Amido and Ayena Shaibu were arrested by detectives on patrol on Abeokuta/Imeko Road.

Crime and Security learnt that six victims Saheed Ajala, Erik Akpo, Mayo Benueno, Kowe Silvan Akpo Martins and Eche Akpo were rescued from the suspects. The victims were from Benin Republic.
