Stress is triggered by over burdening of the body with work and other activities, without getting enough rest to allow the body heal.

Illnesses experienced by people when stressed are common cold known as flu, headaches and a slight fever, all occurring due to elevated cortisol levels which in turn is as a result of poor or deprived sleep. That's according to medical practitioner, Dr. Chijindu Nkuche.

Stress is often given very little consideration but from research, it leads to cardiac diseases, psychiatric illnesses, which on their own can kill a person.

Here are a few things individuals should do to overcome stress

1. Develop a regular sleeping schedule and stick to it. Every hour of sleep before midnight is worth 2 hours after midnight.

2. If you are in bed and find that your mind is racing through so much concerns, get up and write them down and be ready to look for solutions to those concerns the next day because they will keep coming back until they are resolved.3

3. Drink a little black tea: Black tea helps in reducing cortisol levels.

4. Chew gums this helps in keeping an individual’s mood stable and it relaxes some nerves

5. Form the habit of taking a deep breath several times in a day as it reduces increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

6. Find reasons to laugh a little to boost brain chemical know as Endorphin. This will help your mood.

7. Avoid watching television late into the night. Sorry, you may need to leave those Zee World and Telemundo series alone.

8. You can add some blue light in your sitting room or bedroom. Blue lights, according to a Harvard study, has a resitting effect on the circadian rhythm (a cycle that tells our bodies when to sleep, rise, eat--regulating many physiological processes).

Do not wait until stress knocks you out. Guard against it.
