NOVEMBER 18 IS PROVIDENTIAL - IT WAS THE EXACT DATE THAT THE GREATEST BIAFRAN ACT OF CIVIC DISOBEDIENCE IN HISTORY COMMENCED.
The Women's revolt of 1929 was sparked off on NOVEMBER 18, 1929, by a scuffle between Nwanyeruwa, an Ngwa woman
and a census enumerator, Mark Emereuwa.
Before the counting stated, the women group had decided not to countenance any new tax during the hyperinflation of the 1920s when family incomes were rapidly
declining (just as it is in today's Nigeria).
Emeruwa never expected that task he was asked to perform would trigger a massive revolt of Igbo women when on that fateful
day, November 18, 1929, he went to late Ojim's compound, his first point of call, and asked a widow, Nwanyereuwa, to "count her goats, sheep and people." The widow queried him angrily: "was your late mother counted?" The furious widow then went to
the town square to report the incident to the women folk who coincidentally were holding a meeting on that day. That was
what started the riots.
ALSO, THE REVOLUTION THAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE BREAK-UP OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA IS CALLED THE NOVEMBER REVOLUTION, BECAUSE
IT COMMENCED ON NOVEMBER 18, 1989. It is also called the Gentle Revolution (Slovak: ne? n? revol?cia) because it was a uniquely non-violent transition of power from communism to democracy.
