Tragedy occurred at a BRD Medical College in Uttar Pradesh, India this week, as 60 children reportedly died after oxygen supplier withdrew his services over unpaid debts.
It was gathered that 34 babies died at the neo-natal intensive care unit, 12 died because of encephalitis, while the rest died of other unspecified causes.
However, BRD Medical Chief Medical Superintendent Dr R.S. Shukla denied the deaths had been caused by a lack of oxygen supplies when asked by Reuters.
In a statement released by the hospitl, the children’s death was blamed on “drop in pressure in the supply of liquid oxygen” on Thursday, as the hospital further disclosed that added cylinders were procured from various other suppliers.
The breakdown of the death toll provided by the hospital showed a spike on Thursday, with 23 fatalities, including 14 babies at its neo-natal unit. The government is investigating the matter.
“We have launched an inquiry and a preliminary report should be out today,” Anil Kumar, Gorakhpur’s divisional commissioner, told AFP news agency.
“Yes, sixty patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don’t think it’s linked to reports of oxygen shortage.”

This is what will soon be happening in Nigerian private hospitals since Nigerian patients feel that doctors don't deserve to be paid for their services because they think they studied Medicine to do charity and serve humanity for free.

When patients refuse to pay doctors just because they don't feel like, doctors will fail to pay hospital staff, fail to buy fuel to run generator, fail to pay suppliers......and then incidents like this happen.

What is this one talking about? What is paining you? Doctors are meant to save lives, if you so much like money, read a regular course. Your type are not supposed to be a doctor assuming you are one.

the person supplying the oxygen is a business man, not a doctor.

The parents of the children got nothing to do with the incident .. Was it written in the passage that they didn't pay?

Nigerian doctors would have dosed them the usual "'Antibiotics" when out of Oxygen!

In real sense, why do Nigerian doctors love to prescribe Antibiotics?

Very irresponsible of that Hospital. They should be sued for every godam penny they have...

The supplier is doing business and is totally within his rights to cut supply when he's not been paid for services rendered ...

Tragic, just tragic!
