As a result of prevalent drug trafficking and offences by some Nigerians in South Eastern Asia, especially China. Our forum (a group of Nigerian Youths in China) wrote a letter to the Nigerian Embassy in China citing the causes, the effects and the solutions.
Here is the copy of the letter.

Dear Sir,
NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA AND DRUG TRAFFICKING -THE CAUSES, THE EFFECTS AND THE SOLUTIONS
For many years, innocent Nigerians abroad have been experiencing stereotypes, verbal attacks, humiliations and unfounded accusation of drug dealing by their friends even when the concerned persons have never touched or seen drug of any kind in their lives. It's been a prevalent and daily occurrence to most Nigerians living mainly in South East Asian countries like India, China and Malaysia, to the extent that making new friends and building business relationship have become a sisyphean task of trying to pass a camel through the eye of a needle. This is partly due to news of drug-trafficking offences (no thanks to the recent drug war in a part of the country) and also the number of Nigerians arrested abroad. According to PDRM, this year alone (January to May 2017) 26 Nigerians have been arrested in China for drug related offences, of which in 2016, 63 Nigerians were arrested for; a heartbreaking figure that is four times Bangladesh's, which took the second position that year.
For this purpose, a concerned Nigerian group "Towards a greater Nigeria (A group of Nigerian youths in China) held a session to discuss the causes, effects and possible measures that can be taken to put this shameful acts into the trash can of history.
Among the likely causes stated were:
Greed, government ineptitude, non-availability of job opportunities, "quick money" syndrome, wrong social mindset, lack of patience, dilapidated educational system (no innovation and skill acquisition), corruption and laxity among custom officers and law enforcement agencies, poor upbringing and bad parenting, ignorance , lack of patience, low self esteem and poverty.

More so, the effects of drug trafficking were also thoroughly considered. We unanimously agreed that drug trafficking hinders opportunity, creates bad reputation, criminalisation of all Nigerians, set backs, increase in cost of governance, unwarranted disrespect and deliberate denigration of Nigerian citizens at international airports, unnecessary suspicion and victimization, distrust (which births poor alliance with foreigners for business purpose), and decrease in overseas job opportunities for Nigerians.

Conclusively, as there can't be a problem without a relative possible solution, the following solutions and recommendations were offered to the highlighted problems:
1. Greed should be more addressed from home,
2. Orientation of people traveling out of the country by National Orientation Agency (NOA) and also public announcements on radio and TV condemning drug pushing,
3. Introduction of courses in schools (from elementary schools to higher institutions) that target prohibition of drug trafficking and drug abuse,
4. Even distribution of wealth nationwide: Improvement of SMEs and promotion of entrepreneurship,
5. Proper monitoring of students' movements in and out of foreign countries by Nigerian embassies,
6. Implementation of whistle-blowing strategy to enhance the effective exposure and apprehension of drug syndicates,
7. Installation of effective hi-tech scanning machines in our airports,
8. Employment and empowerment of capable people without favouritism and tribalism,
9. Severe punishment of people, who are convicted of drug offences,
10. Thorough investigation of rich people without definite source of income, so as to know the source of their wealth,
11. Adequate cooperation between all government parastatals and concerned security agencies, including Nigerian embassies worldwide, for timely information sharing, proper tracking, and arrest of suspected drug traffickers.
Sir, we therefore seek to use your honourable position as the ambassador of the federal republic of Nigeria to the People Republic of China to channel these noble and clear-cut recommendations to the concerned authority for proper consideration and eventual implementation.
We so believe if our recommendations are carefully considered and implemented, drug abuse and trafficking will become a thing of the past in our great nation and the lost enviable reputation of our dear country will be restored.

*Towards A Greater Nigeria is an initiative of the Nigerian youths in China, our core objective is to give back to the society in the areas of education, youth empowerment and community development service. More so, to bring to the notice of the concerned authority issues of national interest and prestige.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
