A serious incident has taken place on Thursday afternoon with 12 dead and 90 injured as a van mounted the pavement on Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

Spanish Interior Minister, Joaquim Forn, has now confirmed the tally with Islamic State terrorist group claiming responsibility via Islamist linked news agency, Amaq, according to jihadist monitoring portal SITE Intel Group.

Emergency services are evacuating those stuck on Las Ramblas as the search for anybody involved continues across the area with one image released by police of a potential suspect.

Authorities have released a statement refuting claims of attackers barricaded into a restaurant, noting that two men have been arrested along with the seizing of a second van.

Catalan police have confirmed that a vehicle jumped a police checkpoint on the outskirts of Barcelona, running down two policeman, earlier in the day. It is not yet certain if that incident is linked to the attack at Las Ramblas.

US president Donald Trump and London mayor Sadiq Khan have led the international tributes to the city and the victims.
