CONTRARY to what soccer-loving Nigerians have been made to believe, embattled coach of the Super Eagles, Shaibu Amodu, may lead the team to the South Africa 2010 World Cup afterall.

The coach was recently redeployed to train the home-based national team with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) saying that it had begun the search for a quality technical adviser to take over Nigeria's preparation and participation at the Mundial.

But an official of the NFF hinted early in the week that the search was a ruse to divert attention from the coach and later make it necessary for the federation to recall Amodu to the team before the World Cup.

The NFF had in the wake of the Angola 2010 African Nations Cup mentioned Guus Hiddink, Trappatoni, Hassan Shehata, Peter Taylor, and Luis Van Gaal, among others, as coaches that could take over the national team.

But according to the source who pleaded anonymity, the NFF knows that "no coach employed between now and the kick-off of the World Cup can lead the Super Eagles to win the title. So, it amounts to a waste of money and time to begin to talk of getting a coach for Nigeria now.

"But Nigerians don't want to hear that. So, to please the people, they started this chase for a foreign coach. But we all know that it will not work. The NFF will continue with the search until it becomes clear that getting a new coach will no longer be advisable, and people will start clamouring for the return of Amodu.

"Some of us advised that the team be handed over to a combination of Siasia and Keshi to prepare for the World Cup, but somehow, some people don't want to hear about the two coaches. So we will watch and see."

The Guardian learnt that a meeting of some pro-Amodu campaigners in Surulere, Lagos, on Wednesday was to strategize on how to gradually change Nigerians' attitudes towards the coach and pave the way for his return to the job.
