A former Minister of Petroleum Resources , Prof. Jibril Aminu, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the ongoing strike and continue to negotiate with the Federal Government.

Aminu made the appeal on Wednesday in Kano during the Fourth Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria.

According to him, ASUU should continue to negotiate with the Federal Government with a view to find lasting solution for the issues raised.

“The strike embarked upon by the university lecturers would have a negative impact on the students.

“Therefore, I’m calling on you to please go back to your work for the interest of the country.”

Aminu, who was also the chairman of the occasion, commended media organisations in the country for their relentless efforts in promoting peace and unity of the country.

According to him, the media has contributed so much towards ensuring the development of the country, especially in the area of the existing freedom of expression.

“I also want to call on them not to engage in publicising fake news and allowing hate speeches in the country”, he called.

Chief host of the conference and the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Mohammed Yahuza, who spoke, said the conference was to mark three events.

“We assembled here to mark three events which include the commencement of the ACSPN annual conference, to support the university to commission three main structures in the communication’s faculty.

“And also to signify the commencement of a collaborative activity between the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) and the Bayero University to review the current National Mass Communication Curriculum”, he said.

According to Yahuza, the review of the curriculum is to reflect contemporary realities in current global trends and best practice.

“This is a major national assignment that the university and the NUC are undertaking as an activity under a grant which our Faculty of Communication won from the MacArthur Foundation.

The fund is to enhance training and research in investigative journalism at the beginning of the year.

“The grant is over N200m and it was won by the university through the effort of the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Umaru Pate, and his team of lecturers.

“They competed for and eventually emerged as the only university in West Africa to secure the money,” he said.

With all due respect sir, would you have said the same if you were part of the party(ASUU)?

ASUU, in my opinion, are just looking for a medium to "not work." Greedy company of supposed intellectuals.

I Just wish they wouldn't get paid for the duration of the strike. But I can keep dreaming.
