My mom was my immediate family, before I got married, and started a family of my own. My wife effectively takes over the role of immediate family, something my mom would have understood.

^^^ A grown man needs to take marriage seriously. Your statement gives the impression wive's are expendable. If you really love your wife, you'll realise it's not that easy to replace her, and start all over again.

I would assume a mother would make the supreme sacrifice for her child, and if she had the choice, will prefer her child saved his / her spouse before her.
