Plateau United have been crowned the new champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) interestingly for the first time ever subsequent to beating Enugu Rangers 2-0 on Saturday evening at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.

The Kennedy Boboye led side led on the league table for a long stretch of the season with MFM FC nearly trailing with a point up to the last day of the season. The Saturday fixture was set for a troubled finish to the league with eyes on Maiduguri where MFM FC played El-Kanemi Warriors and Jos where Plateau United hosted Enugu Rangers.

The Peace Boys from Jos, first-time winners of the NPFL, were able to beat the incumbent champions Enugu Rangers 2-0 on Saturday with goals from Emeka Umeh and Benjamin Turba.

The Jos team needed the win to keep off the trailing MFM who are leading by just a single point and any slip would have gifted the Olukoya Boys the trophy.

Be that as it may, MFM, then again, were given a 1-2 crush by Laddan Bosso-led El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in the Match Day 38 game.

After 38 grueling and jaw-dropping league games, Plateau United amassed 66 points altogether to become the 19th Nigeria League champions.

Beside the mammoth trophy they lifted on Saturday, Plateau United additionally stashed N50m having finished as champions. They will represent Nigeria next year CAF Champions League alongside Fidelis Illechukwu led side MFM FC.

Congrats to Plateau United for a merited win of the league without precedent for their history.

Looks like our secondary school inter-house sports trophy.

Another potential incompetent representative in the Caf champions league along with MFM.

Even the quality of the presentation was bad, see the stage compared to other European leagues' presentation of a trophy. NPFL need to be improve. Nevertheless kudos to plateau United

Anthony Okpotu won the Rashidi Yekini Award for the highest goal scorer in the league. He scored yesterday to take his tally to 19 goals, one higher than Stephen Odey (who has moved to Switzerland). Odey had led the scorers chart for a long time.
