Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Monday, said Igbo play the worst politics among the ethnic and geopolitical zones in the country, and advised them to review their political strategy in order to reclaim their relevance in the nation’s power equation.

Okorocha, who said this in Owerri, during an interactive session with top media practitioners, also condemned activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and reiterated his stance for a united Nigeria. He stressed that Igbo would lose more should the country break up.

“Igbo have to change their strategy, in order to reclaim their relevance in Nigeria’s power equation. Quote me anywhere, Igbo play the worst politics in Nigeria.

“Today, Hausa have realised they can win an election without Igbo.

“Hitherto, Hausa used to think they could not win elections without Igbo. Now, they believe with the combined massive populations of Lagos and Kano, they no longer need Igbo to win, hence, the latest alliance between Hausa and Yoruba.

“So, where is Igbo today in Nigerian politics?” he asked rhetorically.

On IPOB, Okorocha said the group would have made better impact if it had restricted its agitation for equity in the sharing of the nation’s political and economic resources rather than the struggle for secession.

“I’ve always said Igbo have this feeling of abandonment. IPOB would have made better impact if they had operated under any other name other than Biafra, to push their demand for equity in sharing of the nation’s political and economic resources. The call for secession was childish.

“IPOB should have fought their struggle like the Niger Delta youths, Arewa youths and Yoruba group.

“Who is Nnamdi Kanu to ask Rochas to follow him to war?

“Check it out, no Hausa man living in the South East owns a duplex neither can you see a Yoruba man who lives in a room and parlour apartment of his own or an investment worth N20 million.

“But, should Nigeria break up today, Igbo will lose trillions in properties and other investments in Lagos, the North and other parts of the country. This is why we all must condemn IPOB’s call for break up.”

Okorocha said by its struggle for secession, IPOB has created a feeling of distrust in Igbo among other tribes, thus jeopardising the chance of Igbo in the country’s power equation.

“The South South has produced a president, the South West has produced a president and vice president while the North has produced many presidents.

“By political calculation, it was expected that very soon, Igbo would have a chance to produce the president, but, the same Igbo want to break away from Nigeria. Where is our wisdom?

“Regrettably, IPOB activities has created fears in the minds of Hausa and other ethnic nationalities in the country, that, once Igbo becomes president, they would secede.

“So, where are we? This is why I said IPOB were childish in their struggle. We should all condemn the call for secession because if Nigeria breaks up, Igbo will lose.

“Igbo need to change their strategy and political calculation, to remain relevant in Nigerian politics,” Okorocha rounded off.

But they were relevant when NPC and NCNC partnered in the 60's

They knew how to play when shagari partnered with ekweme in the 70's - 80's

They knew how to play when obasanjo gave them juicy positions during his regime

They knew how to play when they ran GEJ administration to the ground

But they don't know how to play during buhari's administration. So all they do is shout marginalisation when the Yoruba's have been playing the opposition since 1960

"Igbo plays worst politics in Nigeria" - Okorocha.

Okorocha is Igbo...(or is he truly an hausa man)?

Therefore, Okorocha plays one of the worst politics in Nigeria.

Igbos play politics of emotions and not of strategy and critical reasoning,

If not that how would a region give over 90% of its vote to someone who did virtually nothing in terms of infrastructure for that region?

It baffles me that a certain GEJ who promised a Second Niger Bridge among other things and reneged could garner such a massive vote,

The SEners rejected Buhari purely because of emotions (religion and tribe), the SS had to support their son but the SW had to vote PMB because of what they stand to gain and what they lost from GEJ

Politics is interests and not emotions.

The way this country is structured , it will be very hard for someone from the South to win an election against a Northerner.

Buhari didn't need votes from the South East and South South to win , he only had to get some few million votes from the South West to add to his Northern Base votes.

And make Okorocha stop comparing apples to oranges abeg,

Igbos, this isn't mocking you but a genuine passionate appeal from me: forget about partisan politics, pay attention to this man. Regardless of all the wrongs he might have done, he has been right on one thing, that you guys need to step up your game of you really wanna cash out in Nigerian politics.

Like most other people, i also have this feeling that, perhaps, someday, Nigeria would split along her various geopolitical zones. But until that time comes, one has to make the most of the status quo while demanding for what one imagines is better than the status quo.

You need to start the process of building bridges and strong alliances across the country. Politics is about numbers, and as far as numbers go, the only ally you seem to have at the moment isn't big enough to secure you that top spot. You need to work towards amending fences with at least one of the other Big Two.

Your brand of politics at the moment which is nearly 100% antagonistic posturing and blackmail (the "marginalisation" card) hasn't been working for you and it never will. I believe that is the message Okorocha is trying to pass. You vilify him and call him a Northern slave because he seeks to play politics the Nigerian way. Well, guess what, he surely understand how the system works way better than you all. That is the honest truth.

Afam4eva once captured it nicely...
The first mistake you don't make in politics is to bring yourself down to align with minorities except it's for your own interest. It's high time we stopped being emotional and moved with the tide and align with satan if need be because contrary to what a lot of Igbos may think, we're no saints and nobody is looking for a saint in Nigeria. As long as you're crooked but appear friendly, people will respect you.

I wish you well and hope you think about it.

Take it or leave it, Okorocha is probably the smartest polithiefcian in Igbo land. Most Igbo politicians need to learn and understand how to play national politics.

I pray an Igbo man becomes President soon but Nnamdi Kanu's recent agitations though right but wrong approach/methodology will greatly affect that chance anytime soon.

The truth is always a bitter pill to swallow!

Igbos do not know how to play politics and it is not just because Okorocha said that but because Nigerians know that from time immemorial.

I mean Igbos, not this group iDumb that are parading themselves anyhow.

Politics is not about how many people you know, it is about how many people that know you.

And that is what Buhari played out, he aligned with the West when he knew SE and SS would not play ball.

That, my brother, is what politics is made of. Knowing when to form the perfect alliance to champion your cause and that is what is lacking in the Igbo case. Can you tell categorically which political alliance with which region Igbo have? You see my point!?

Yorubas are the perfect fodder for any political arrangement here in Nigeria because of certain elements they have. Chief among them are Numbers and Political dexterity (take it or leave it). Only anyone weaker than a newborn would not agree that the political propaganda and shenanigans that uprooted Jonathan did not have the ten fingers of Yoruba in it or you think the Hausas have the savvy to negotiate such an unprecedented upset in Nigerian history.

Election is around the corner, it would be wise for the SE/SS to form an arrangement with another bloc and quit whining.

in Politics, you may lose even if you have the most laudable cause to fight for without proper association.

That's what Yoruba and Hausa know, which unfortunately, Igbos do not!

The governor talked as a politician, while mazi kanu talks as a common man on the street.

Common man on the street suffers the cluelessness and insincerity of those politicians.

The politicians that never care about how to make the country a better one.

Today nigeria is a destroyed country, where common man suffers terribly.

They think they are entitled to political office and that is the beginning of their disappointment and anguish.

Interestingly, they fail to see that an Igbo president isn't exactly the same as Igbo welfare being furthered. Only a foolish man would think having a president from his tribe would equal a better deal for the entire tribe, that is sub-intellectualism at best. If it were so, the north should be better than other parts of Nigeria by now. The southwest should have witnessed great improvement after OBJ's stint and his role in PDP after his departure.

For a tribe who pride themselves on being the smartest and most intelligent, it is funny to see how they have been played like a fiddle by very own lack of reasoning ability and the divide-and-rule tactics employed by wave after wave of basic politicians in this country. Why have eastern governor's not turned turned the east into a paradise or, at the very least, something approaching paradise? Because politicians in this country are largely the same, whether from the east or the north or the west and these same politicians know they have more in common with fellow politicians from other tribes that commoners from their own tribe.

The next elections in PDP have been zoned to the north by propel like Ike REkweremadu, no less but according to the common igbo man I, a Yoruba man, am a traitor and his enemy. No problem. I beat no ill-will for the Igbo tribe but I will deal very warily with him henceforth.
