There are several causes, symptoms and types of neuropathy information available on popular neuropathy-related online forums or message boards. Your symptoms may vary based on the cause of neuropathy and the damage to the peripheral nerve. In some cases neuropathy might also be required if the protective coating or the myelin sheath of a peripheral nerve is damaged. Your symptoms may differ if your motor, sensory or autonomic nerve is affected.

Symptoms of neuropathy

The most common symptoms that make you decide whether you need neuropathy are pain, tingling sensation or numbness in your hands, legs, arms, or feet. The symptoms might manifest in the other parts of your body as well. Symptoms of neurological damage are a result of damage caused to sensory nerves, which are responsible for conducting sensations of temperature, pain or touch.

As the effects of neuropathy are observable on the motor nerves and autonomic nerves as well, its symptoms may extend beyond mere tingling, pain or numbness. The motor nerves are responsible for muscle movement and hence, damage to these nerves can affect muscle function. Moreover, as autonomic nerves control bladder, digestion and heart rate related functions, neuropathic effects on these nerves may hamper these vital biological functions of your body.

Though many problems and their symptoms are connected to neuropathy, there are majorly 8 signs that relate to neuropathy related disorder and they are listed here.

Acute, stabbing pain

In case of damage caused to the sensory nerves or the myelin sheath of these nerves you may experience sharp and stabbing pains in the affected areas even on the slightest touch. The painful burning sensations or feeling like jolts of electricity striking the affected areas in the legs, arms, feet or hands are the result of damage caused to the sensory nerves or its protective covering.

If you are suffering from neuropathic damage in your feet you might face problems in sleeping. To not to aggravate the pain by the bedding, avoid sheets for they may rub with your feet, wear socks, or use special frame in the place of bedding to sleep.

Tingling and numbness

If the neuropathic problem you are facing is tingling and numbness in your hands or feet, it might be due to damage caused in peripheral sensory nerves. As the nerves at the extremities are the most vulnerable, numbness and tingling sensation in the hand and feet is one of the most common symptoms that suggest you need neuropathy. In such cases make sure that you carefully examine your feet or hand or any other affected area for any sort of blisters or sores to protect further damage.
