The milk is usually refrigerated before delivery. The old man couldn't put the Wednesday and Thursday milk in the fridge so it became warm {remember it's summer too} the milk man, oblivious that the man was dead still brought a fresh bottle that friday morning that was still cold. However, the mailman stopped delivering papers after Tuesday because he knew the old man was dead and wouldn't need to read the paper.

very thoughtful..

A famous chemist was found dead in his laboratory.

There was nothing around him except a paper with the names of chemical substances:

Carbon
Oxygen
Nickel
Lanthanum
Sulfur

On the day he was murdered, the chemist only had 3 visitors: his wife Mary, his nephew Nicolas, and his friend Jonathan.

The police arrested the murderer right away.

How did they know who killed him?
The elements are NiCOLaS

A dead body is found at the bottom of a multistory building.

It looks quite clear that the person has committed suicide by jumping off from one of the floors.

A detective comes, goes to the first floor and walks in the room facing the direction in which the body was found.

He opens the closed window of that room and flips a coin towards the floor.

He goes to the second floor and does the exact same thing till the last floor.

Then, when he climbs down, he tells the team that it is a murder, not suicide.

How did he know?

This is flawed , very flawed in fact

I see people saying the windows were all closed , what if someone came in afterwards to close the windows , someone who probably felt it wasn't right for the window to be open , someone oblivious of the "suicide".
What about someone being an accessory to suicide ( is that even a crime ) , a man plans to commit suicide and tells an accomplice to close the windows after he jumps to his death.

Like I said this riddle is flawed ( as well as the others ) and in real life situations isn't as straight forward as that. Being a die-hard fan of Agatha Christie novels , these crime riddles would never hold water on my side.

You lot should go read

Murder of Roger Akroyd
Witness to the prosecution
And there was none
Hercule Poirot's Christmas
Sad Cypress
Murder on the Orient express
Death on the Nile

Modified : Another perspective from someone , what if he jumped off the roof ?

How did he know?

If he committed suicide, then who closed the window after the jump?

A serial killer kidnapped his victims, held them hostage and offered them a possibility to stay alive.

They had to choose from two pills.

One was poison, other was harmless.

Whichever pill the victim took, the serial killer would take the other one.

The victim took their pill with water and died.

The killer obviously survived.

How did the killer always end up with the harmless pill?

Both pills were harmless, the water was poisoned

The newspaper man. Last delivery was Tuesday while the milkman had continued to supply milk oblivious of the man's death. wink

I agree with this.

the wife killed him, the chemist has his way of documenting his visitors. Since there is no element that suggests Mary, I think Mary did the job cos she never gave the chemist time to book her visit.

The windows were closed...
It could have been left open if it was suicide.

Your inference is still subjective.

What 'if' the windows were self-shut on entrance/exit type windows?

I guess, the detective drew his conclusion other than the windows in the crime scene

A man was found dead with a cassette recorder in one hand and a gun in the other.

When the police came in, they immediately pressed the play button on the cassette.

He said “I have nothing else to live for.

I can’t go on,” then the sound of a gunshot.

After listening to the cassette tape, the police knew that it was not a suicide.

How did they know?
There's no way he could have stopped recording.

Give this a thought...

Alexander is stranded on an island covered in
forest.
One day, when the wind is blowing from the
west, lightning strikes the west end of the island
and sets fire to the forest. The fire is very violent,
burning everything in its path, and without
intervention the fire will burn the whole island,
killing the man in the process.
There are cliffs around the island, so he cannot
jump off.
How can the Alexander survive the fire? (There
are no buckets or any other means to put out the
fire)
