A Taiwanese woman reports that her 5-day-old iPhone 8 Plus split open while charging. The problem, along with photos of the damaged iPhone, was originally reported by ifeng with an English-language follow-up by 9to5Mac. The woman says she used the cable and adapter that came with the phone to charge her iPhone 8 Plus. After charging for approximately three minutes, she noticed the front panel bulging. It then split away from the body of the phone. She returned the phone to her carrier who sent it on to Apple. The Taiwanese report is given credence by a Japanese user who tweeted pictures of his new iPhone 8 Plus which arrived with the front panel split away from the rest of the phone. The report that the damage occurred while the phone was charging invites the conclusion that the iPhone 8 Plus has a lithium battery problem. That may be the case, but at this stage it’s unclear. The absence of burn marks on both of the damaged phones indicates they did not suffer battery-related explosions of the kind that plagued the Samsung Note 7. Nevertheless, if you have an iPhone 8 Plus, keep an eye on it while charging and unplug it immediately if you see the front panel starting to bulge. Apple has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
