Udom's administration is the worst I have ever seen. No visible improvement since he took over. I made a big mistake thinking the man was as smart as akpabio.
2019 shud come this man needs to go back to Lagos. akwa-ibom is back to what it use to be before Akpabio came in.

instead of building something big, the Governor should have build smaller building which is easier to manage compared to very big building. We are not good in managing big things in Africa, we are not set up like that.

I beg to disagree with the portion highlighted in bold type. sad We definitely need a world-class hospital in Nigeria. undecided Do you know how many patients have to go abroad annually to seek expert medical care, simply because we don't have adequate facilities locally to treat their cases? Don't you see the numerous appeals from sick patients for financial help to go to India, Israel and other countries, for surgery and other forms of medical treatment? The basic problem with this Ibom Specialist Hospital has been the nonchalance of govt and the management. If this hospital were sited in a place like Lagos, it probably would have been managed better.

There are so many doctors that find it difficult to get a place, to carry out their internships. sad And we have many Nigerian medical consultants abroad, whose expertise is badly needed here, locally. This hospital could have been a great example of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), if only it was well-managed. Private hospitals like Lagoon, St. Nicholas and Reddington in Lagos, that do not have half of the facilities in Ibom Specialist Hospital, are thriving and doing well. So why can't this hospital be made to work? shocked

Doctors find it difficult to get a place ? I doubt.
Re: Ibom Specialist Hospital, Uyo Shut Down by Nobody: 10:55pm On Oct 05, 2017
It looks like the Hospital was built just for corruption. 30 billion and 41 billion spent to build a hospital and then Cardiocare or whatever they call it was just there to collect millions and millions from the silly State Governor, without generating any revenue.

What is wrong with the Black race ?

Yes, they do. Junior doctors that are going for internship find it difficult to get placement in medical centres.

Medical schools are also springing up and producing more graduates beyond what the sector can currently absorb for internships and more medical students are receiving training in Eastern Europe and Asia, and coming back to Nigeria to complete the internship programme.

To make matters worse, there has been no corresponding expansion of secondary health facilities to provide more training slots. The difficulty in securing internship slots by young medical graduates is likely to influence their future career plans. As internship slots get more difficult to come by, residency/ post-graduation training opportunities also dwindle.

Difficulties in securing these opportunities for career development will probably negatively influence new medical graduates and they will continue to seek better opportunities outside Nigeria. The high rate at which Nigerian doctors are accepted into training programs in the most advanced countries in the world today is a testament to the capability of graduates from our medical schools. However, Nigeria needs to get its act together if it is to be the “Giant of Africa” when it comes to retention of medical doctors in its health system. http://nigeriahealthwatch.com/medical-training-and-the-challenges-of-finding-internship-slots-in-nigeria/

Speak for yourself. Places like South Africa manage more complex centres. Is it not part of Africa, too?

Nobody is talking about the real issue here.
This hospital was designed to offer premium healthcare at give away fees. It was never going to be sustainable especially with a private organization involved that needed to make profit.
The commissioner was complaining about the monies they demanded as pay. Was he really expecting them to accept anything close to the peanuts Nigerian doctors accept (after strikes and insults from the public) from govt?

That's a great point. I assumed they were just going to subsidize the medicine. It's obvious this place would be more expensive than other hospital because it's specialist hospital. Then they had to run generators and pay foreign staff at premium rates. I'm sure they weren't making same wages anyway.

The fact is statistically the hospital could have been run worked well if they weren't idiotic in execution. Nigerian's spend a billion dollars on medical tourism with 50% of the patients travelling to Europe, Asia, America and other parts of the world. If we captured a 10% of that market share the hospital would be profitable. The fact is the didn't care anything about business case.

Hello

I dint say we do not need a world-class hospital in Nigeria. I said we do not need that kind of " world class" hospital. Note the quotes.

We cannot have a world class hospital overnight and you would agree with me that world class doesn't necessarily mean size or design of the building or dumping expensive modern equipment in it without proper management or training that is why I mentioned research and suitability.

My emphasis was on its workability and not just an avenue for wastage.

Guy, I am not a fan of semantics. sad What exactly do you mean by 'that kind of "world class" hospital?' Is there a particular kind of world-class hospital, or does the word 'world-class,' have a different meaning? Nobody is talking about the size of the hospital, as I have never seen a world-class hospital located in a room-and-parlour structure, or within a bungalow. Different specialties exist in a world-class hospital, and the problem with this hospital is just the state govt's ineptitude. The hospital can work, if all those concerned decide to make it work! Simple. angry

Proper management and trained medical personnel can be obtained to run the hospital, if only govt decides to do things right. undecided It took 8 years to build that hospital, it was not done overnight, so why didn't they make adequate provision for the equipment and personnel during that time? The problem with the hospital can easily be fixed, if the state govt decides to tackle it squarely. undecided You do not need rocket scientists to restore that hospital to full functional status.

True!! sad And the sad thing is that there are international bodies willing to invest in building local healthcare facilities, if a solid business case is presented to them. Here is one example of what a private Nigerian hospital has been able to achieve by emphasising medical excellence.

God bless you for this submission! undecided And they can still get things right if they tackle things properly using the right tools, resources and mindset. There was no reason why the authorities could not have connected the hospital to the power grid. How much does it cost to acquire feeder pillars, armoured cables, transformers etc., to hook up the hospital to the national grid, when you compare what has been spent building it?
