Four children and a teacher have been killed in Brazil after a dismissed security guard threw flammable liquid on them and set them on fire..

According to reports, the attacker identified as 50 year old Damiao Soares dos Santos, who also set himself alight at the childcare centre in the remote town of Janauba in Minas Gerais state, is alleged to be a security guard who was fired days earlier after returning from annual leave last month with an alleged health condition...

Witnesses say the man deliberately doused youngsters in petrol before setting fire to himself.

A teacher was reportedly locked in a room, where the killer set fire to them.

The regional hospital of Janauba reported that 40 other people were brought in, 25 of them with burns and 15 in a state of shock. The latter have since been released.

The Twenty-five people, mostly children aged four and five, are being treated for burns in local hospitals.

The mother of one of the victims, four-year-old Juan Miguel Soares Silva, told O Globo newspaper that she had been considering enrolling him in another nursery prior to the attack.

Jane Kelly da Silva Soares said;
"We are about to move to a different neighbourhood,"

"I woke up early to drop him at the nursery. When I saw him again he was already dead in hospital."

Lieutenant Colonel John Aparecido Nascimento, commander of Military Police said:

"The situation has caused a great deal of commotion in the city. We believe a security guard at the nursery set himself on fire and set fire to children in the kindergarten."

Brazilian President Michel Temer voiced his horror at the atrocity, Correio Braziliense reports.

He said:

"I want to express my solidarity and regret about this event, and hope that these things will not happen again in Brazil, because the world is very convulsed."

The mayor of Janauba has declared seven days of mourning.
