YES.
In general, you’re less fertile, but not infertile, while breastfeeding. The more often your baby feeds, the longer it may be before your fertility returns. This is because breastfeeding curbs the hormones that trigger ovulation.
Although your period may not return for months after giving birth, your body usually releases its first postnatal egg before you get your first period. So you won’t know you’ve ovulated until two weeks later when you menstruate. Your best chance of conceiving while breastfeeding is to have regular, unprotected sex.
Breastfeeding stimulates a hormone called prolactin, sometimes called the milk hormone. High levels of prolactin stop you from ovulating.
If your baby sleeps through the night at an early age, your levels of prolactin will reduce and you’ll probably become fertile again within three months to eight months. The same is true if you’re supplementing breastmilk with formula.
If you’re breastfeeding your baby exclusively, day and night, your prolactin levels will be high. The amount of prolactin you produce while breastfeeding does naturally decrease over time. However, you may not have a period for up to a year after giving birth.
Some women actually use breastfeeding as a form of birth control. This is called the lactational amenorrhoea method or LAM. It’s risky though, as you won’t know when you’ll first ovulate. LAM is not as simple as just breastfeeding exclusively. If you are interested in using it, a breastfeeding specialist at your local hospital or children’s centre can offer more information.
If you know you don’t want to get pregnant while breastfeeding, it’s best to start using contraception as soon as you start having sex again. The protection will bring you peace of mind!
