The importance of studying the Holy Bible cannot be overemphasized. The word of God has admonished us to study diligently that we might be approved of God and will be able to correctly handle the word of God and every other truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

There are so many bible versions today and controversies lingers on which is the most appropriate or best to study. I personally use the King James Version of the bible because according to many, it is the most authoritative version of the Holy Bible.

To study the Holy Bible effectively, the first step to take is to pray (Luke 18:1). All understanding comes from God and understanding His own word is not an exception (Proverbs 2:6). Pray to God to give you the wisdom and understanding of His word and He will give you because as the scripture has said, He gives wisdom liberally to all who ask (James 1:5). Also pray that the relevant passages you read in the bible will speak to the present needs of your heart (Matthew 6:8 ).

Read context by context and don’t read out of context. Some of the bibles are designed with topics assigned to each context but if you are not with such bible, try to discern the context even without topics. For example, Matthew 7:7-12 is a context of it own where Jesus admonished His followers to ask anything they want from God and they will receive (Mark 11:24). The Holy Bible consists of different ideas arranged context by context.

Read slowly and don’t be in a hurry to go over to the next page. Understand one verse completely before trying to go over to the next verse. Remember more haste less speed, and it’s not by how far you study the bible but how well you understand the little you know and have read.

You can study the bible also with bible concordance. Concordance is like a dictionary of the bible which helps in finding meaning to some words that are obscure. Just the same way we study other books with the dictionary, so also we study the Holy Bible with concordance. There are variety to pick from and one of them I know is the Strongs Exhaustive Bible Concordance.

Since no one can know it all, rely on others like your church teachers as your guide as you study the scripture. If there is anything you still don’t find clear after following those steps, you can ask a more experience person who has gain more knowledge of the scripture than you have. You can also ask any other who isn’t your teacher but you feel will have an idea to that posed bible issue.

Finally , there is no specific time to study the bible. Study at your convenience but most preferable in the morning because you may have been refreshed from the previous day and your understanding will be refreshed also.
