THIS is the alarming moment a firewalker in India stumbled on burning coals and fell face-first into the extremely hot pit.

Heart-stopping footage shows her stumble and fall during a Hindu firewalking ceremony held in honour of a goddess.

She was halfway through the dangerous walk when she tripped on her Sari and plunged into the roasting floor.

Luckily people watching in the crowd reacted quickly and pulled her from the burning coals.

According to the New York Post, she suffered only minor burns.

The ritual of walking on fire is known as Thimithi which is celebrated as an international Hindu festival in October and November.

The firewalker prays to God for their wish to be fulfilled by the Goddess Draupati Amman, who was the wife of the five Pandava brothers in the Mahābhārata epic.

In the epic after the Pandava royal family was victorious over the Kauravas, Draupadi walked on fire to prove her adherence to righteous living.

Firewalking is mainly practised by southern Indians in India, Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
