Congratulations on your new role!

You are fresh out of school, vibrant and ready to be of key resource to your employer. Take advantage of this moment and run with it. But before you tie your laces for this career run, here are a few things you need to know as a fresh-out-of-school employee.

Your boss is your future

When you get a job, you are answerable to someone. That person who is referred to your manager or line manager is the person who your progress lies in his/her hands. You should always try to work in the person’s favour without losing your self-dignity. Don’t subject yourself to being a slave or a Yes man just because you want to be in that organization. See the person as a role model – never hesitate to reach out to the person for work related assistance, knowledge if there is something you don’t understand.

Be a team player

Always have it at the back of your mind that there is no I in team. If you join and organization the realization that you will be working with a lot of people from different backgrounds should have sunk in way before you even accepted the offer letter. So be open to working with different people and be willing to compromise.

Be humble

You are new, be willing to listen and learn. Be open to corrections and don’t believe you know everything, you are obviously fresh out from school, so don’t enter believing you are an expert in your field. You are not and they would not expect that from you. Check your ego at the door and leave whatever bad attitude you have or have been told you possess outside the office walls.

Be friendly always

Be warm, friendly and approachable always. You will meet a lot of new people at your place of work. People from diverse backgrounds, attitudes, age range, work habits and experiences are some of the individuals you will be associating with in your new place. Smile more and enjoy your work People are very open to people who show a positive attitude to their work. Be friendly.

Be aware of office dress codes

The last thing you want to do is to exceptionally stand out in your work place. You want to be fully integrated in your workplace and not to stand out. Be a part of the team by having a good knowledge of the dress code and conform to it. Always base your work outfits on what your colleagues are wearing.

Own Your Mistakes

You are new to your work and could be related to a toddler getting his first steps. When you start off, you will make some mistakes. Mistakes that will eventually become a leading trail of your success tomorrow, accept them, recognize them, own them and learn from them and ensure that they are not repeated again.

Goodluck!
