A non-governmental organisation in Vienna, World Poverty Clock, funded by the German government and led by Homi Kharas, deputy director of the Brookings Institution in the US, and Wolfgang Fengler, a World Bank lead economist, is predicting that Nigeria will overtake India as the country with one of the world’s poorest people.
A Financial Times’ report below revealed that an estimated 47m people, almost equivalent to the population of Colombia, are likely to escape extreme poverty this year. But that will not be enough to get anywhere near the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ending extreme poverty — defined as living on less than $1.90 a day at 2011 purchasing power parity prices — by 2030.
By 2030, there will be 200m fewer people living in extreme poverty than there are today. However, 438m, or 5 per cent of the world’s population, will still be below the extreme poverty line. This year, for example, the extreme poverty level is rising in 30 countries; in these nations a total of 9m more people will be living in extreme poverty at the end of 2017 than 12 months previously.
“Very few countries in Africa are making fast enough progress on ending poverty, and in two large countries, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, their populations are growing faster than their economic growth, so poverty will likely continue to rise,” Mr Kharas said. “We need a dramatic break from current trends in over 30 countries in order to end poverty worldwide.”
Nigeria’s population in extreme poverty is rising by 5.7 people per minute and that in DRC by 3.6 people per minute. The rest of Africa is reducing poverty by 4.7 people per minute. The situation in Nigeria is such that in February next year it will overtake India as having the most people living in extreme poverty in the world, at 82m, the clock predicts.
The forecasts are compiled from hundreds of data sets, including figures from national governments, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Mr Kharas said it was important to address the challenge, “not in global terms, and instead to look at it country-by-country”.
“We may be able to accept that small pockets of poverty remain in some countries — in fact some poverty is present even in the richest countries — but we want to avoid any individual countries, even ones with small populations, being in deep poverty,” he said.
The UN’s SDG is unlikely to be met because, globally, the rate of poverty reduction is slowing — largely on account of Asia getting close to ending extreme poverty. Meanwhile, many parts of Africa are making insufficient progress, the clock reveals.
The extreme poverty rate in Africa will drop from 34 per cent this year to 23 per cent in 2030, the clock predicts. But the absolute number is likely to be only slightly lower than what it is now because of population growth.

India is far poorer and I doubt your claims will ever be true..

Nigerians are far more creative and enterprising than many countries of the world including India

Our major problem is just bad governance, if that is taking care of then the rest is history..stop making Nigeria look bad ...

In few years to come Nigeria population will hit a billion, with no serious plans being laid to combat the crises that will confront the largest black nation on earth.
Gullible youths continue to deceive themselves on an old dullard who instead of providing developments that will combat the future threat of the nation, continue to send gunboats and fighter jets to areas that needs real developments after their lands have been left infertile by wicked leaders including the present ones.
There is no doubt that Nigeria will be worst if they continue with the present crop of visionless and irresponsible leaders in power today who have no plans for the children of tomorrow.

Economic Restructuring is the answer to all this mirage of problems. Let every region control her resources, this will encourage healthy competition among the various regions.

This country has no future, imagine Nigeria with population of 180 million having more poverty stricken people than India with a billion plus people!! Poverty is growing at 5.7 people per minute in Nigeria while the rest of Africa is reducing poverty at 4.7 people per minute!! Even other African countries are leaving us behind!! Maybe very soon they would coin the term "fourth world country specifically for Nigeria since we no longer measure up to other third world countries!! Are we still wondering why our people are perishing in Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea trying to escape?? Lord have mercy!!!

And some dumb people will believe this rubbish. In case you don't know, China with population of about 1.4bn people with GDP around $10tn has more poor people than West Africa combined. India has population of about 1.3bn people with GDP $2.2tn less than California state of United States. Nigeria has GDP more than half a trillion dollar with less than 200 millions people.

No future at all. Wait till oil price finally crashes then you will see Nigerian economy truly crumble. Even the poor of today will look very rich then.

Typical Zombie mentality!! If Nigerians are more enterprising, how come more Indian companies are in Naija working and employing Nigerians?
How come there are more millionaires and billionaires in India than in Naija?
How come there are about 100 Indian companies on Forbes 2000 Global Largest companies while Naija has like 3 companies?

I keep wondering what will happen to the country by the time oil becomes worthless in a few years time when the West switches over to electric cars and clean energy sources. Only this morning, the ASUP have embarked on strike again! The country is already borrowing huge sums of money to finance it's budget annually, then the question is, since income in the near future is going to fall as predicted due to collapse in oil revenue, how are we going to finance subsequent budgets not to talk of paying back our debt? Or are we going to be borrowing till infinity?? What happens when our creditors stops lending to us?? I don't need to be a prophet to know that the country is heading to the rocks!! I pity those leaving in denial, take a look at the indices and forecasts, and be realistic!!

Nigerians love to lie to themselves. If you tell them the bitter truth, they hate you for it. From the politicians to the masses. Don't worry. I have my popcorn ready to watch the movie unfold.
