When we Talk about old school Music, we are talking about R&B  which stands for "Rhythm & Blues." The term arose in the 40's basically to describe African-American music, which previously was marketed as "race music." Old school/ R&B is a catch-all term to describe styles of music including rock & roll, soul, funk, and now "contemporary" R&B.
