Can Proficiency In Fruity Loops Alone Qualify Someone As A Music Producer ? by hatch: 6:40pm On Mar 24, 2010
Over the years things have just gotten easier by the minutes when it comes to digital revolution in terms of music and the advent of more digital audio work station soft wares such as Cubase ,Fruity Loops, Acid, Project5, Orion and co.

Now its funny to see that here in Nigeria, our own music producers are also producing quite impressive sounds with the limited resources at our disposal. However it gets quite laughable when someone who's proficiency is restricted to Fruity Loops alone as a software begins to proclaim him or her self as a music producer.

I had my own brief stint in the music industry far back in the late 90's and was mainly into Sound engineering and mixing but still find it quite weird for folks with just a knowledge in a particular software (Fruity loops) to feel that is enough to make them a producer

Sorry, i forgot to mention that this observation as a result of sound production for a documentary i was supervising which lead to my interaction with some so called producers with a knowledge of Fruity Loops alone. wink

Well I have similar thought as you. I once said that, while Music production is something I have done as a hobby, I am not keen on calling myself a producer. But that is me I guess, as the word "producer" get thrown around a lot lately.

The thing with Fruity-loop is that while it is very good and can reproduce almost anything out there - mind you I never said everything. The down fall is that every one can use it as it is almost one of the most pirated music software ever. What you then get is people who produced subpar stuff, who have no idea what sound engineering etc is about calling themselves producers.

Not taking anything away from those who are using it as their main choice of DAW, however it is not the industry standard. The industry standard in my opinion are Pro Tool and Cubase [and to some extent Logic], but then, these days it is about what works well for you.  A few Producers have become rich in Brazil just producing the local artist with FL studio.

Personally, I bought a boxed version and just do not see what the fuss is about. Needless to say, I am using Ableton live at the moment and Have Pro tool and a few other bits on order.

I suppose the term producer have been watered down now and it could mean anything. From the guy who laid down the beats, down to the artist who oversees the production of his own album.

I very much doubt you will see FL studio used in a Professional setting, but I could be wrong.

you are wrong, there is no producer that doesnt have fruity loops, .
the only difficult thing is mixing and mastering .
if u can produce a beat you are a beatmaker, but if u can mix and master it then you are a producer. period.!

For starters, saying "period" will be good if that is the end of the dicussion.

I am not keen on arguing with you, but know this. I have been in studios here and checked out schools where music and sound engineering are taught. None of these place have Fruity loops. It is not an industry standard, but if you wanna keep arguing. Please be my guest.

Here is a quick google result and the first professional studio that comes up do not even use Fruityloops in their software, however pro tools are used.

You will not find serious artist record with FL studio.

Also the term producer like I said have been watered down to the extent that it could mean anything. An artist who oversees the work on his/her album can be classed as producer too, hence why you see some albums with "Executive Producer".  Dr Dre in some his album makes the beat with other artist etc, yet he credit his name as "Producer".

Been able to make beats and master a track are not the end definition of what makes a producer, there are a few factors and more are coming by day. Hence why I said it is now a watered down term.

Mastering is a whole different ball game. The people that master are on a whole different plane. They have ears from pluto. They don't hear sounds, they hear frequencies.  Maybe mixing, but I won't put mastering as something a producer needs to know. There are specialists for that. Not sure how it works in Naija tho. . . but from my experience, mastering is for pros. Special equipment and all kinds of tech stuff. Na real yawa
