Domain trading is a good business because you can start with just $25 since you can register a domain name for between $1.17 & $14. The most expensive domain name, Insurance.com was sold in 2010 for $35.6 million while in 2007 VacationRental.com was sold for $35 million & PrivateJet.com was sold for $30.18 million in 2012. There are 12 factors you must consider before buying a domain name you intend to sell. Your understanding of these factors will determine whether you are going to succeed in the business or not. These factors are responsible for my own success in the business. Factor 1: Trademark: If you buy a domain name that is protected by the trademark law, it will be very hard for you to sell and the trademark owner can get it back through UDRP. The Uniform Domain-Name-Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) began in 1999 to protect trademark holders from cybersquatting, which is a term used to describe the act of intending to make money by registering, trafficking in or using a domain name simply to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else.

Names that identify the source of products or services in the marketplace are trademarks. You are at risk of losing your precious domain name if the owner of an existing trademark convinces a judge or arbitrator that your use of the domain name makes it likely that customers would be confused as to the source or quality of the products or services. A good domainer should check that the domain name he wants to purchase is not a trademark.

Factor 2: A .Com Is Better: If you go through the top domain sales we have examined in this lecture and the daily sales reports by Namebio, you will discover that most of them belong to the .com top level domain (TLD). The .com TLD, managed by Verisign, was one of the TLDs in the internet when the Domain Name System (DNS) was implemented in January 1985. it is not a .com, not easy to pronounce, and it is not even short. Yet, it sold.

13 characters are better but can be more in certain conditions. Mixture of letters and numbers is not advisable except in certain cases. Numbers only domain names are hot cakes, but there are factors to consider before purchasing them and I may treat them in this thread if time permits.
