Here are simple ways to know if your accessories are made from natural or synthetic leather. Natural leather is created by tanning animal skin and raw hides while synthetic leather is made using plastic materials (vinyl)

The smell
Natural leather and synthetic leather both have a smell, synthetic leather usually smells like vinyl (plastic) whereas , natural leather has this distinctive odor of animal skin / hides

The surface
Natural leather comes with tiny pores and the patterns are irregular, but in artificial leather, the patterns are repeatedly consistent . Artificial leather feels smoother and harder but real leather feels softer and thicker.

Water resistance
Natural leather absorbs water due to the presence of pores but artificial leather do not allow water Penetration .
Artificial leather prevents air from going through, thus sweat can build up, causing discomfort.

Elasticity
When you wear shoes made out of real leather for a certain period of time, it naturally expands and makes the shoes more comfortable to wear whereas shoes made out from synthetic leather do not expand.

The fire test
To determine if your leather material is natural or synthetic, apply the fire test.
Real leather will only char slightly, and smell a bit like burnt hair but synthetic leather will actually catch flame, and smells like burning plastic.
