Fans of the movie Titanic have literally been asking the same question since the film’s release in 1997: Why the heck did not Jack just get on that door with Rose?! Mythbusters had a whole episode focused on the topic, as well as Kate Winslet is of the mind-set that Leonardo DiCaprio’s character probably could have fit on the makeshift raft.

Now, the film’s director, James Cameron, is setting the record straight. According to him, it’s not about science at all, and the answer is truly a lot more straightforward – and savage – than anybody might imagine. In an interview with Vanity Fair, James explained: “The answer is simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies. ” He called the whole door scene an “artistic choice, ” commenting that it’s “very silly” that folks are still discussing it 2 decades later.

James went on to describe that the ending of the film would have been meaningless if Jack had lived. “The film is approximately death and separation; he had to die, ” he elaborated. “So whether it had been that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons. ” Welp.
