What's The Scariest incident that Has (Almost) Happened To You?

It could be the descent of armed robbers in your house, in the middle of the night, the failure of your examinations in high school, or your rustication from campus because of your youthful exuberance in joining a fraternity. For those living abroad, the loss of a job and the fear of becoming homeless is another scary incident. What has been the scariest incident that has/almost happened to you?

Let me go first.

I missed my flight from SFO to Nigeria for my mom's funeral. Agitated and pensive, I was just confused as to my next agenda. I had 2 options, stay an extra day, or so, and fly to Nigeria, or purchase another ticket to fly to Nigeria. I did a mental calculation. Mom's funeral was on Saturday, and I was still in the States, as of Wednesday. I regretted disregarding my brother's advice that I should leave several days earlier. I finally purchased the airline tickets, and my friend drove me back home, where I just could not sleep. Earlier, my next door neighbour in the village had missed his father's funeral, due to bad roads in Lagos. When I arrived in SFO the following day and realized that I missed my flight again, I just could not help it again. Thank God, a flight attendant, booked me, free of charge into another flight, where I flew into London.

At London, another story. My flight was grounded as a result of the inclement weather. A faint idea of buying another ticket to Nigeria, did not materialize, because the weather took a turn for the better, thus enabling our plane to depart straight to Lagos. When I landed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport at night, which was my mom's vigil night, I did not cut the picture of a grieving son. I was just so glad to be back home, at least momentarily, that I almost forgot that I was visiting for mom's funeral. But when time elapsed, my first inclination was to seek the services of a driver to take me to the motorpark.

I made several trips, but the appearances of some of the rickety cars (sorry, I am not being critical please) convinced me that a better alternative would be to boycott them. Already exhausted, I knew that I would be helpless, if the bus broke down in the middle of the road, and I was under the mercy of armed robbers.

So, I was driven back to the airport, and some good samaritans (God bless their souls wherever they are in this world in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen) encouraged me to pass the night at the airport, that in the morning, they would be some flights departing to PH or Calabar.

Their advice was prophetic, because early in the morning, I was on a flight to PH. As soon as I landed at the airport in PH, my frantic self was relaxed to scout the services of a taxi driver, most of them, lining outside, eager to pick their passengers. I got into one, and the driver, drove me through the sometimes paved, at times, muddled road straight to the village, just in time for my mother's funeral, to the relief of some anxious relatives.

This incident happened years ago, but maybe this incident would register on my mind, for as long as the Good Lord keeps me alive. If I had missed my mother's funeral, I probably would have requested for an exhumation of her body, or would have refused to accept that she had died.

Bottom line: Count your blessings everyday. God is wonderful.

Being involved in a high-way Robbery incident on a nightbus some years back on my way to IMO-state, just before we got to osha!(onitsha) the luxurious bus i was in was attacked by arm robbers who laid in ambush !

But Lucky for us all  in that bus we all escaped( by  HIS Grace!) because the bus driver did not stop the bus he kept on driving even when his tyres had gone flat, till we got to a safe distance. we practically spent the whole day at this point till a replacement means of transpo was found for us!

did i tell yah all ? the armed escort in the bus was useless, with his lame dane gun!  grin
did i stop taking  luxurious buses after that? nahhhhhhhhhhhh! grin i was on the next available night-bus to osha!  grin

@ Ndipe
this is a nice thread you got here, and i hope i'm allowed to visit it as often as possible because i hace 1001 scariest stories that i don't know which to pick

But for starters:

I've been involved in many armed-robbery incidents, they're almost uncountable but this is one that has made me indebted to God with my soul for the rest of my life.
Now when i went down to Nigeria to do my secondary education, it was decided i was going to be a boarder (as in live in the dormitory/school hostel)
Being a girl's convent boarding school we were visited by money-hungry-bastards on a often.
Now during my SS1, my dad was contesting for one government seat like that, i think to be the speaker for the house of assembly for anambra state, hence we had a lot of workers on our compound ranging from cleaners to wacthmen to drivers, name them. At some point some got sacked, and new faces were hired.

My story might not be of the scariest thing that happened but definitely ALMOST happened.

This fateful night we were sleeping in our various hostels (we had from houses 1-11, at the time), when these mopols(as we called the armed robbers) visited as usual, now their routine is always to didvide themselves, two men to each hostel.
I don't have to go into details of what they do, because they just collect cash, thank God they never raped anyone, atleast none that we knew of. There was one incident where they shot and killed our watch-night who had just wedded recently prior to the incident (we all felt sorry for his wife). Anyway, i and ofcourse others didn't think there was anything different or special about this particular robbery, in our opinion it was just one of the usuals,,,,,,,,

Until the mopols after six months were caught on another robbery trip, and they confessed on television to have six months earlier visited "Holy Innocents Juniorate Convent"(my school). LO AND BEHOLD, one of them was my dad's former driver by name -------, not only had he been our driver, he lived some stone throws from our house.

My since then $3 million question is WHERE WOULD I HAVE BEEN TODAY IF HE HAD VISITED MY HOSTEL AND SEEN ME?? A question i'll never want to find out the answer sad sad sad

Here's another one, hope i'm permitted smiley

During my first year in "Videregående skole"(norwegian), we were having swimming classes, we were all in the swimming pool cracking jokes and laughing, no one was aware of the other person. Now the swimming pool is a large one, as in LARGE. Unknowing to me it had a danger zone(marked "broad deep"wink, that part of the swiming pool was made for professionals and need you ask?No, i'm not one.

Carried away by the laughter i got nearer and nearer the danger-zone without even realizing it, all of a sudden i had lost it, i couldn't swim anymore. I had lost grip, i was struggling for my life like i'd never done before. I tried lifting my head and shouting for help, but each time, my mouth got filled with water. I was actually drowning. My classmates were having fun unaware of my near-death experience.
I was just about to give up, when i felt a hand pulling me out of the water, unfortunately i was much more stronger than the girl so i pulled her towards me instead of the other way round.

Luckily, a guy finally succeeded in pulling me out and they succeeded getting the excess water out of me, but i wasn't me the rest of the day. I was feeling dizzy, headache, nausteous, name them,,,
Most of all i couldn't imagine what i would have been saying today if this hero of a guy didn't rescue me.

*update*
I later learnt that my saving angel of the day was my best friend who was actually standing above the pool ready to dive in, she looked into he water, noticed my struggling body and shouted "Linda is drowning, help, help", the others couldn't see me because they were in thewater themselves, only someone above the water could.

And that is how God saved my life for the millionth time cheesy cheesy cheesy

My mum made me promise i'll never visit a swimming pool ever again, i've not actually kept that promise but i'm more than careful now wink

I almost drowned in the river during my first year in secondary school at Obot Idim. My angel was Ita Oku, a senior student at the institution. I wish I could meet him once again to express my sincere thanks for what he did for me. Honestly, I have met very nice and caring people in my life.

To Ita Oku, whereever you are in this world, May God Bless you with His Salvation in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen. There is no greater gift than God's Salvation.

beautiful thread. smiley

My worst nightmare was running into some  guys that scared me stiff at a check cashing stop here in America.
I had been involved in an accident that got my car totalled, the other driver was at fault and his insurance paid me $5,000,the value of my destroyed car.
This was my very early years in America when money was extremely tight for me and this $5,000 was like $5 milion.

I was very behind on bills and totally scrapped for cash that as soon as the cheque (check) arrived,I needed the money immediately so I drove to a check cashing stop to get the money.
In there were 3 mean looking black guys,as soon as I got my money, they got into their vehicles and waited and when I exited the store, they followed me in their car and made all the same turns I made, this was in the mid nineties,I had a beeper, cell phones were still unaffordable.
I prayed and prayed and prayed and eventually lost them.
When I got back to my apartment,I was so horrified and parked my vehicle further from my unit and ofcourse had no sleep that night.
That was one of the scariest nights in my life.

I nearly drowned in a lake when I was 4 years old and it must have been very scary for my poor mother. I remember not being scared though (at 4 you don't know you'll drown) but just feeling disgusted at being in the dirty water,

My scariest thing was when I was driving down a very busy road and a bed fell off a truck in front of me and landed on my car bonnet. shocked I couldn't see where I was going, I had to just brake and hope I didn't end up in a car-crash.

I was returning from a wedding very late at night with my sisters when we ran out of gas. (we had noticed it was low but had hoped and prayed it would take us home).
The car "quenched" on Apapa oshodi expressway just before coconut bus stop the wrongest place to be stranded at night with all the touts and area boys crawling around in between the trailers parked there.
the driver took a container to walk to the nearest gas station and buy fuel. we waited nervously in the car. the area boys were hovering around when they noticed we were having car troubles and it was just a matter of time before they pounced. i was sweating bullets. i had heard that women were raped there everyday. they would drag you near the edge of the water and gang rape you. my teeth were chattering with fright.

eventually a group of about ten descended on us. they took all our jewellry and bags. we were coming from a wedding so we had on our finest. they almost cut our ear lobes trying to get at the ear rings. they also took the car stereo before running off.
i was scared men! i could smell the alcohol and marijuana on them.it was awful.
im just eternally thankful to jehovah they didnt decide to violate us. that would have been tragic.
luckily the driver got back minutes later with gas so we were able to get away.till date i get nervous when travelling at night. my eyes keep scanning the bushes looking for danger. embarassed
i definitely feel safer in the company of guys. a group of defenceless women will always be taken advantage of. undecided

When I was involved in an accident as a kid travelling with my family from Ogun state to Imo for xmas. Those few seconds when the car went spinning and falling into a ditch were the longest seconds I have ever lived. I can still remember my mom screaming and grabbing us all to herself. My dad was travveling in another car with the rest of the family ahead of us. We had just left a police check point when the tires burst. The car was spinning and out of control. Was any car camming behind us, I probably would not be here to be sending this message.  According to my dad, they only realised what happened when they saw the swirl of dust from the rear view mirror. It must have been equally scary for him. I cant forget him racing towards us and hugging us all. That day I saw my father cry. Miraculously, no one was hurt. I still remember I left my footwear in that car in our hurry to leave the scene.

My Scary story. . .
February 1st 2004, Umuahia, Abia state. I was doing my NYSC at that time and Manchester United were playing Arse-Anal. As a staunch Man Utd fan, that was a match i couldn't have missed. I was staying in The Catholic Corpers Lodge, and also moonlighting at a guest house with a friend of mine. the guest house was like 300metres from the 'Viewing centre'
The match started at about 10:30pm, if you know Umuahia you'd know that the roads are empty at around 8pm, so by this time the road was empty, but there were over 20 people in the viewing centre so i felt it was pretty safe. . .
The match ended 3-0 or 3-1, after 12 midnight, it ended on my birthday (feb 2nd, my best birthday present!!!), so i started going home. to my profound horror, i found out that all those people there were all off duty okada men, they zoomed off on their okadas and left me alone on that dark road.
I jogged down to the guest house, pounded on the gate. i'd forgotten they lock the gate by 12 midnight and they don't ever open it until 6am. I knock tire, no answer. I didnt carry my fone because of fear of theft.
So i started jogging the 1km distance to the Catholic Corpers lodge

Scare #1
100m down the road, a police pick up[ pulled up beside me, 2 cops jumped out and levelled their Mark IVs at my head! I nearly shit myself. They roughly demanded to know who i was and where was i going? i told 'em i was a corper and i went to watch the match, and that i was heading to the Corpers Lodge. They asked me to reach into my pocket slowly and brin gout my ID card. I did that and gave it to them. One now asked the other one to search me. i'd forgotten that earlier that day i had won a big pocket knife in the Guinness promo and it was still in my back pocket. COme and see the look on their face when they pulled out this wicked looking pen knife. I hastily explained that i won it from the promo. The guy looked at me fo rlike 1 minute (almost shat myself once again) before telling me to go home. i speedily complied!!

Scare #2
About 600m down the road, i was already recovering from the poilce scare when i started really getting scared abt how quiet and ghostly the whole place was. all the tales i'd been hearing on flesh-eating cannibals and kidnappers/ritualists started surfacing. it didn't help when i jogged past a house and saw an old woman raking leaves together and burning them. What kinda person would be burning leaves at 12:30am? And she looked so witch-like. the next house had like 3 youths outside talking in hushed tones. all fell silent and watched me jog pass. I come dey fear, come dey regret say i go watch match that day. The next thing i knew, something moving very very fast flew just above my head. you know the kind of noise and disturbance u feel/hear when someone throws a stone very close to your ear? that's what it felt like. But this was somethin gmuch faster and silent.
Every single hair on my body (from my head to my nearly hairless ass) stood on end. see d kind fear wey catch me, eh? I didn't wait to see if it was a bird, an arrow or a low-flying witch. I kicked my palm slippers ahead of me, caught them midair (in a move even Jet-Li couldnt have done) and took to my heels. I'm pretty sure i averaged 50mph!! Even worse, i was running uphill and my heart was pounding like crazy.

Scare #3
I got to the corpers lodge, everyone was sleeping. . .! I nearly renounced Manchester United then and there!

I hammered on the gate and someone finally woke up, where i was led, shaking and gibbering some incomprehensible stuff about witches and policemen and Arrows and bakassi boys. . . the only thing they could make of this was that Man Utd won grin

And that's my worst scare ever!

my own experience still stare at me everyday, two days to my wedding i went out for shopping on the island in Lagos, on my way, there was a heavy hold up on the Third mainland Bridge of which made me to come down from my car while my younger brother took over the wheels, i walked up to Adeniji Junction of the Bridge waiting for my brother to pick me but behold the spot i was standing was a black spot known for PICK AND RUNS thieves, at that point i saw a mini van approach me i thought it was a normal passenger bus but unfortunately some police men came out almost 5 of them asking me different question, of which at that moment i wee-ed on my jeans, they asked why i was shaken i told them  that i don't know that the spot i was standing was a bad spot couple with the fact that i have not been involved in a police case before, at that point my younger brother drove by and stopped, that confirmed my innocence. the most annoying of all was that my ID and complimentary card was in the car. they believed what i was saying when my brother packed to pick me. me en i could not tell anybody till date what really happened cos it embarrassing and scary

Beleive me I stayed there for one Hour, not able to imagine leaving the car there,  I anticipated sleeping in the car till morning but luckly saw a taxi who took me home, still couldn't get to sleep because I was wondering what would happen to the Car. I was horrified to death. Thank God for the Taxi and that none of those hoodlums touched my car

one of them :
the day i decided to join the ---------- fraternity doing my school days.i was in my second year then, after undergoing the first two screening i thought the third and final was just going to be a naming ceremony with lots to drink, gyration and more orientation.
my scare started not after i noticed/discorvered that we were actually travelling outside the state (Enugu) but when we diverted the main road into these thick forest and still drove for more than two hours before we stopped.we now had to walk up this i don't know what, a mountain/hill and for another hour-thirty mins we were still clearing bushes and tring to locate the ground before we finally found and  settled into the island.i'm a physically strong person and i was gyming at that time, but my people what i went through can neva be imagined/tried on wrestlemania, their were guys who thought i was favoured/protected by the "excos" and just wanted to get their own pound of flesh for been too close even as a jew man.

where i lost my nerve was when i almost rolled down from the top, i said all the prayers i could remember and my saving grace was a tree on my path down, i was there for some mins before i was pulled out - thought i was already a dead man - wetin i for tell my God and my people, say i won join confra  undecided undecided embarassed grin grin grin

can't remember all the almost-missed-me bullet stories

thats some story u've got there texa. I have many scary stories but would drop it down one by one. . . . . . . . . . . . . . The most scary experience i had was about my mum. My family is although small a scattered one. i am the only one with my mum. whe incedent happened in one december when my mum fainted. i just came back from school so eager to see my mum once again. we were so excited to see once again. towards new year, my mum had some things to take care of outside so she set out only for her to come back home looking tired and half dead. i asked what happened and she said she needed to rest thats all. Few minutes later after walking out of the room and going back in i found my mum where i left her with her eyes wide open and her 32 white teeth shining at me. upon closer examination i discovered that the only family i could count on had fainted. You could imagine how scared i was.
