Carve Nigeria into many ethnic states: Kadhafi

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, who enraged Abuja after suggesting Nigeria be partitioned between Muslims and Christians, has now proposed the country is carved into "many" ethnic states, a report said Monday.

"In fact, Nigeria's problems cannot be resolved by dividing the country into two states, Christian and Muslim," Kadhafi was quoted as saying by the official Jana news agency.

Like the former Yugoslavia, he said, Nigeria comprises "other populations who want independence" without religious considerations.

He cited "the Yoruba people in the east and south who demand independence, the Ibo people in the west and south" as well as the Ijaws.

"The model that best fits Nigeria, which comprises many ethnic groups, is Yugoslavia" which was divided into six countries, including Kosovo whose independence has not been unanimously recognised.

The Libyan leader said earlier this month Nigeria should be partitioned between the Christian and Muslim communities to end its sectarian violence.

He proposed that it should follow the partition model of Pakistan, which was born in 1947 after the Muslim minority of predominantly Hindu India founded their own homeland, led by Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

Kadhafi, until recently head of the African Union, had suggested a Christian homeland in the south with Lagos as its capital and a Muslim homeland in the north with Abuja as its principal city.

The remarks enraged Nigeria which recalled its ambassador to Tripoli over what it said was Kadhafi's "irresponsible utterances" which had made a mockery of his calls for African integration and unity.

The Libyan leader's comments had "diminished his status and credibility," said foreign ministry spokesman Ozo Nwobu, reading from a strongly worded statement which expressed the government's "very serious concern".

The statement also accused Kadhafi of "theatrics and grandstanding at every auspicious occasion".

Kadhafi's earlier comments came after several hundred people were killed early March in sectarian violence in Nigeria's central Plateau State.

Plateau State, with Jos as its capital, is the de facto buffer between the predominantly Muslim north and the largely Christian and animist south.

Nigeria's 140 million population is almost equally divided between Muslims and Christians.

He seems passionate about this issue,

Possibly he may seen the light (converted to Christianity -  shocked ) - how else do you account for his sudden acquisition of rationality?

I agree but why cannot the ijaws and Igbos form an entity together, we both need Oil. grin grin grin

It will be selfish for the Ijaws to want to do a runner with such wealth, so much Igbo blood has been shed for their and our cause.

Its no as easy as it appears on the surface.

Actually Kaddaffi is notorious worldwide for his very eccentric views as well as his jealousy of the power and influence of Nigeria in Africa.

So it is the kind of statement to expect from this controversial personality.

On a more serious note he does not seem to have any respect at all for our leaders and politicians.

Nigeria is in such a sorry state that external forces can now make wild recommendations without caring for the consequences.

Nigeria has become a laughing stock.

Jonathan lead us out of this mess in Jesus name.

[s][/s]this has totally shown that ghadaffi has no knowledge of nigeria probs.why is he now canvassing for an ethnic pattern breaking after he discovered that he goofed when he advised a religious style breakway.he should just face his country afterall he happens to be the longest serving president and there was never anytime, nigeria government challenged his sit-tight attitude to the libyan presidency.

You have to admire a mad man who is so focused on his DREAMS.

that pancake-faced dictator is so focused on becoming an emperor before cancer or HIV catch up with him. He should be more concerned with the possibility that Libyans would get smart one day and massacre his "royal" family en masse.

Amazing that a president can survive with so many wrinkles.
