I've always wondered who came up with the name 'idiot' for it because growing up, I thought the same thing too till I was able to sieve information myself.

Once caught one and set it free the next day as I was so curious and excited at holding one, being my first time seeing it that I kept it with me for the night, dropped some roots for it to feed on too.

It's harmless as long as it ain't threatened.
