The victim, who was later identified as Dr. Charles Ndulue, was shot and killed at Sapele Road near Central Hospital, Benin City.

Sporadic shooting by the unknown gunmen forced patients in the hospital as well as passersby to scamper for safety.

Following the stampede, about five people sustained some injuries as the gunmen allegedly shot at the vehicle conveying Dr. Ndulue and his family.

The incident brought activities in the Central Hospital to a stand still for several hours, while injured Dr. Ndulue was rushed into the hospital where doctors worked frantically to save his life to no avail. He later died of gunshot injuries.

A young lady in company of the late Ndulue in the car, who is also a house-help to Chief Ndulue, father of the deseased, told newsmen at the hospital that they were returning from a church service at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Mission Road, not knowing that the gunmen were trailing them.

The girl, who also sustained gunshot injuries, said the late doctor sensed danger and accelerated, but the gunmen shot several times to demobilise the Mercedes Benz car, which forced it to plunge into a drain by the roadside after they had punctured one of the tyres.

According to her, the gunmen, who were driving a taxi-coloured Audi 80 saloon car, alighted and pumped several bullets into the USA-based doctor, who returned to Nigeria on his father’s invitation.

It was gathered that when onlookers, including okada riders moved to assist the doctor who had fallen into a drain, thinking he was an accident victim, the gunmen shot sporadically into the air to scare them away before pumping bullets into the late doctor, killing him instantly and injuring the house-help, while a two-year-old girl said to be the doctor’s daughter was lucky to escape unhurt.

A mobile policeman, who was at the Benin United Baptist Church opposite the Central Hospital, was also shot at by the gunmen during the operation; he was seen at the hospital receiving treatment, but declined to comment on the matter and refused to disclose his name.

The doctor on duty was not also available for comment as he was said to be busy in the theatre.

Edo State Police image-maker ASP Peter Ogboi, while confirming the incident said no arrest had been made in connection with the killing, promising to issue a statement later.
