Senator Wada Dies At 53 by Ayemokhia: 2:49am On Apr 03, 2010
Senator Tawar Umbi Wada (PDP/Gombe South) is dead. He died yesterday at the National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.

Until his death, the late senator, 53, who was born on January 27, 1957, was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture. News of his death filtered into the National Assembly barely one hour after the Senate concluded the screening and confirmation of ministers-designate.

He was expected to have represented the Senate President at the Senate Committee on Education’s national stakeholders submit in Abuja, on Tuesday but could not attend the event.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Ayogu Eze, who confirmed the death of Senator Wada in a statement, described the senator's death as the passage of an icon.

Senator Eze said in the statement that "we received with deep shock the passage to eternity today, March 31, 2010, of one of our most resourceful colleagues, Senator Tawar Umbi Wada. He was an erudite legislator, who brought his training as a lawyer to bear on the fresh insights he brought on every issue on the floor of the Senate to which he made contribution.”

Also, a terse statement by Senate President David Mark described the death of Senator Wada as "shocking and devastating," adding that the death of the erudite senator from Gombe particularly at this point in the life of the National Assembly was most unfortunate. Senator Mark, who recalled the late Wada’s participation at plenary on Monday, said the erudite senator would be missed by the Senate.

"Giving Senator Wada's academic approach to debates, the Senate shall surely miss his notable interventions and mastery of the Constitution and the Senate Rules Book. A gentleman per excellence, Wada was a consistent, dedicated and reliable parliamentarian. Senator Wada would certainly be missed by the Senate,” Mark stated.

“He was in his element when knotty matters requiring legal clarification were on the floor. His eloquence caught national attention when he debuted as spokesman of the fifth Senate, honing every issue with his sharp intellect and deep breadth of vision. He was easy going and very friendly, always minding his business.”

Senator Eze further noted that in his nearly eight years in the Senate, there was no single incident of animosity between Senator Wada and any senator, saying that he was a complete gentleman.

"We will miss the infectious warmth of his character and his broad-minded views on matters of national importance. While praying God to grant his soul eternal repose, we commiserate with his family who must obviously be devastated by this strange Easter gift. Adieu, great colleague," he added.

Senator Wada was elected into the Senate in 2003 was popular amongst his colleagues because of his views. A lawyer by profession, he attended the University of Jos, where he studied law and was called to the bar in 1983.

He later rose to the position of Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Police Affairs before being appointed as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Gombe state.
