Governor Willie Obiano has renamed Abakaliki Street, Awka as Club zone.
The governor made the declaration over the weekend when he visited the area.
Government House Correspondent Kenechukwu Ofomah was there and tells us more.
The former Abakaliki Street which was once an obscure lonely road where all forms of crime and criminality held sway, had developed to a beauty with dazzling streetlights shining at nights.
Also evident was the high rate at which residential and commercial structures were being put up as well as the nightlife that was in full swing as operators of relaxation centers rake in so much money.
Governor Obiano had arrived Gaga Lounge, one of the Clubs along the street in the company of Service Commanders in the State, some top State Government functionaries and his friends.
Speaking after renaming the street, Governor Obiano said his government will sustain its efforts at promoting security and creating a business friendly environment that will attract investors into the state.
He observed that with the security his government had put in place, funseekers and holiday makers now come into the state to enjoy, a development that has increased growth of the local economy.
The governor explained that the renaming of the street was to reflect its true status, assuring that his government will put in place more facilities to make the area conducive.
A friend of the Governor's and former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Ndi Obi acknowledged that business is done 24 hours on the street, commending Governor Obiano for his huge investments in security.
On his part, the Owner of the facility, Mr Buchi Obi who spoke through the Special Assistant to the Governor on Agricultural Input, Mr Tochukwu Obi recalled how dreaded the area was before Governor Obiano intervened and pointed out that the value chain around the former Abakaliki Street story has great implications for wealth creation and overall economic emancipation in the Awka Capital Territory.

With facilities like hotels and lounges using lots of diesel for generators the ANSG has to ensure that no building is close to or under the high tension otherwise that street is an explosive disaster waiting to happen.

Anambra State Government Gives Quit Notice To Okada Riders in Onitsha, Awka

Commercial motorbike (Okada) operators in Onitsha and Awka, the capital city of Anambra State have been given until July 1, 2018 to change to another trade or vacate the two cities for good.

This is one of the many resolutions from the meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council today, Tuesday, May 22, 2018. The ultimatum given to Okada operators in the two cities is part of the overall strategy adopted by the state government to deepen its crackdown on crime and restore sanity to Onitsha and Awka.

Similarly, residents of some make-shift structures on the banks of the River Niger stretching from Onitsha to Ogbaru have also been given until August 1, 2018 to relocate from those places along the waterfront as they have been marked for demolition. This is also a part of the campaign against the men of the underworld in the state.

The deadlines given to Okada operators and the shanty-dwellers are intended to offer them enough time to make the necessary adjustments in order to fit into the emerging socio-cultural scenario in the state.

Other far ranging resolutions of the Council include the establishment of a Committee on Environment with a mandate to clean up Anambra State, clearing out garbage dumps and overflowing drainages and demolishing illegal structures that are either obstructing the way or ruining the aesthetics of the Anambra environment. The committee is expected to sustain the on-going campaign to put an end to roadside trading that often leads to avoidable traffic congestion and return sanity to the roads and highways of Anambra State.

Re-inforcing the hard line posture of his administration against street-trading and erection of illegal structures across the state, Governor Willie Obiano specifically commended the agencies behind the on-going demolition exercise in the state, urging them to sustain the momentum until the state begins to wear a better look. He also sent a note of warning to owners of illegal structures along the famous Awka Road in Onitsha, saying that very soon the demolition team would sweep through the area.

The governor further announced that important public places like the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Alex Ekwueme Square and the vast premises of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) would soon be given a facelift and properly remodelled to fit into the dynamics of the day.

According to him, the Amphitheatre of the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre would be redesigned to serve as a stadium and completed as soon as possible.

The governor also frowned at the spate of daring encroachment on government land in the state by speculators and warned that there would be severe consequences for anyone who wanted to flagrantly break the law.

You are right But they are still part of the onitsha metropolitan area since there is no physical or even noticeable demarcation between onitsha, nkpor and obosi.

Developments in these areas have merged.

Glad the ANSG is coming to their senses. There is loads of work for okada riders and street traders but they are attracted to easy money making opportunities by converging on dense areas. Labor costs in Anambra are ridiculously high at well over 2,500-3,000 per day because of these two factors. Poor migrants flock to Onitsha and Awka and prefer to ride okada or sell torches or slippers on the street than serve as cheap labor. As a result construction costs are high, food costs are high and in addition they constitute a nuisance and deter high end investment particularly on commercial streets.

They should contact innoson Nnewi to produce 30 to 50 seater capacity air condition buses for INNER & intra city transport. The franchise should go to 4 to 6 ANAMBRA based transport companies like Young shall grow,GUO,IZUCHUKWU,EKESON ETC to provide these Innoson special buses for the Cities of Awka,Onitsha and Nnewi. THIS franchise will be renewed every 4 years based on performance!. THIS will bring new and secure jobs and increase the industrialization of the STATE!. The govt will be the regulator!. They will fix fare prices!.This will bring billions of money to the STATE purse. It will bring sanity to our cities!. To be continued

What you said is okay. But MOTORCYCLES are not a means of public transportation anywhere on earth except Nigeria.

We should not allow an illegal thing to continue just because it was allowed for a long time under terribly corrupt military rule era.

Anambra government did right for her citizens by banning this primitive mode of transportation. Every other progressive state in Nigeria and including northern Nigeria states have already banned Okada in their capital and major cities. It is wrong and it is retrogressive to endanger the lives of your citizens like that for too long. Not to mention the security risk posed by okada use in abetting crime in these cities.

Over 99.9999% of the okada riders are not even from Anambra, so they should go to their states and ask their government to provide for them. Our government does not owe any person anything except providing infrastructures, security and making policies that will benefit the general public.

The notice has been given if anyone is not comfortable with it, the person should stay away from the 2 cities mentioned.

They can also relocate to other states with okada.

What about people that depend on Fake Drugs or sell re-labeled expired goods to make a living? What did government provide for them to leave fake drugs or stop re-labeling of expired sardines and selling to the public? Better still, what about people that depend on armed robbery to make a living? What did government provide for them after they used Police to stop robbery?

My sister, if you are making a living through doing anything illegal such as trading in unauthorized places, selling fake edible consumer items, transporting people with motorcycles instead of a three or four-wheeled vehicle, smuggling contraband goods or doing prostitution, government does not owe you NOTHING the day they finally decide to do the right thing.

Here's the CAPACITY of TRANSPORT.

1 bike = 1 passenger.
1 Keke = 3-4 passengers
1 Toyota Hiace = 14 passengers
1 Metro Bus = 23-30 passengers
1 Luxury Coach = 50 passengers

Now lets look at the SPACE involved.

1 Keke uses the space of 2 bikes but carries 2x passengers of 2 Okada
1 Toyota Hiace uses space of 4 bikes but carries 3.5x passengers of 4 Okada
1 Metro Bus uses space of 6 bikes but carries 4-5x passengers of 6 Okada
1 Luxury Coach = 8 bikes but carries 6x passengers of 8 Okada

So if you consider that the average square kilometer in Onitsha or Awka has over 2,000 people it is pure stupidity to use okada to transport people around. Space is highly limited in these cities and Okada with its low capacity constitutes a general nuisance. Its major utility for people in cities is to bypass traffic jams by squeezing through small spaces.

What ANSG needs to do is plan public transport properly.

1) Expressways for express traffic - public or commercial transport should be a minimum of 14 seater buses. All sidings of expressways should be unencumbered for accident or emergency situations. All buildings must maintain sufficient setback from the expressway. All junctions should be no-parking zones - instead buses must enter a connecting road by at least 50 meters to drop off passanegers.

2) High traffic Streets - should be non-parking from 7am -7pm for minimum 14 seater buses. Trailers should be restricted from these streets during peak hours 7am - 10am and 2pm -7pm. Bus stops must be maintained every 50 meters. All junctions should be banned from bus stops and should be no-parking zones. Buses should only "load" at designated bus stops and within off-road enclosed spaces.

3) Medium Traffic Streets - should be pliable for Keke at a minimum. Keke/small buses should park within enclosed designated spaces for "loading" otherwise pickup passengers at designated bus stops.

BUS ROUTES

In the western world people walk at least 100-300m to a bus stand. The state has to study the movement of people to know where to place bus stands for buses to ply.

BUS PARK LAWS

The state needs to require that all bus parks are:

1) Enclosed by walls, gate, security and ticketing agents
2) Are not within 50 feet of a junction
3) Provide sufficient drop-off zones for passengers
4) Are properly maintained in terms of waste management, gutters and toilet facilities for passengers
5) Maintain frontage unencumbered by illegal street vendors or touts.
