Anambra Lawyers Protest In Awka Over Murder Of NBA Chairman By Fulani Herdsmen

By Daniel Ezeigwe (ABS Reporter)

Legal practitioners based in Anambra State under the aegis of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, are currently holding a peaceful march against the kidnap and murder of one of their members, Mr Francis Onwuachu, the late President General of Omor Community in Ayamelum Local Government Area.

The legal practitioners, in their hundreds, drawn from the seven NBA divisions in Anambra State, began the protest at the Anambra State Judiciary Headquarters, Awka, from where they marched to main gate of Anambra State Government House, Awka.

They also condemned the murder of the late PG, appealing to Governor Willie Obiano to nail the masterminds of the heinous act.

Mr Onwuachu, a lawyer, was kidnapped by suspected gunmen two Friday nights ago, and his corpse was found a week later after series of intensive and cordinated attempts by the state government through the various security agencies to rescue him alive.

Addressing the protesting lawyers, the Secretary to the Government of Anambra State, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu flanked by other senior government officials, assured them that the state government has already made intense efforts to nip the gruesome development, as the governor has pledged that those who want to distort public safety would be made to pay.

Note that Governor Willie Obiano had, yesterday, March 21, 2021, read a statewide address on the current security challenges in Anambra State, stating that every responsive action is being taken to checkmate the sudden trend and bring those who are bent on abridging the comparative peace that had existed in Anambra State over the past seven years to book, with preliminary arrests of suspects already made.

The governor also urged youths, market union leaders, community leaders and other stakeholders in the state to rise to the emerging security threats to protect the state against deadly incursions and help government defeat these enemies of peace.

The Anambra International Conference Center

By James Eze

The International Conference Center, Awka is an iconic legacy of the governor Willie Obianoadministration that has changed the landscape of Awka. Yet, it is almost the least talked about of his legacies.

It is a masterful architectural marvel that was designed to heighten the aesthetic allure of the Awka capital city while performing its simple function as the largest, most modern conference center in Nigeria.

At the moment, the Eko Hotel Convention Center with 5,151 square meters of space and Sheraton Lagos Hotel, Lagos with 6,878 square meters are regarded as some of the largest event centers in Nigeria. The Eko Hotel Convention Center has a capacity to host 6000 in concert.

Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Lagos with its 6,729 square meters of space is also among the largest in the country. And contrary to expectation, the Abuja International Conference Center can only accommodate 2000 guests in its main conference hall. The Calabar International Convention Center is also a great conference facility with a capacity to seat 5000 guests.

However, the Awka International Conference Center is on a whole new planet with a capacity to accommodate 10,000 guests. It is the game-changer for conferencing and hosting of big concerts and shows in Nigeria. It is bound to shift the scale in the event management circuit a bit and probably tilt it Eastwards. If it doesn’t quite succeed, it would at least ensure that the South East is not completely forgotten by event planners while drawing up their annual event calendars. And quite frankly, when was the last time any state in the South East hosted the annual conferences of the Nigerian Bar Association or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria or such other big national professional bodies? How can they remember the South East in their plan when there are no big conference facilities in the region? Thankfully, the Awka International Conference Center has come to change all of that.

The point to note about the Awka International Conference Center is that just like the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, it is a reflection of Governor Willie Obiano’s sense of aesthetics, his taste and his ambition. Obiano is a dreamer whose dreams are usually the size of the sun; immense, luminous and large like a big boulder over the landscape. Dreams are not enough though. But he is also a doer. He never lets his dreams vanish with the sunrise. “The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do,” says American writer, Sarah Ban Breathnach. Governor Obiano is a dreamer who is also a doer. And Anambra is blessed for that.

On completion perhaps, all these shows and musical concerts that have been sporadically taking place in Uli, Ojoto, Oba, Nnewi, Onitsha, Adazi and other towns will move to Awaka where a world class facility awaits them. It would also come in handy for movie premiers and if the community of creative artites in Anambra can push hard enough, it could become the new watering hole for artistes, minstrels and poets. The tourism value of the center cannot be overemphasized. A tour of its layered labyrinths, its manicured lawns, the verdant green trees swaying in the evening breeze, could be the perfect therapy for folks whose taste for leisure stretches beyond the raucous laughter in the noisy beer parlours. Folks like me who look the other way from hard liquor.

Yes. The Awka International Conference Center will be a sanctuary of sorts for dreamers and idealists who need an idyllic place to begin the journey within. It will be a great meeting point for social butterflies looking for contacts that will open powerful doors. It will also be a great place to mark historic moments and days with as many people as one wants.

Surely, Governor Willie Obiano has given us so much to look forward to in Anambra State.

ANAMBRA INTERNATIONAL CARGO AND PASSENGER AIRPORT.

#AviationNews: ✈️Anambra Airport✈️✈️
• From Rumour to Reality.

Standing on the tenth floor of the Control Tower of the Anambra International Airport, Umueri two days ago, I felt a tremor ripple through me. Six months earlier, the spot where the tower stands was a wrinkled patch of earth. Now upon it stands a towering monument to the resilience of a proud and enterprising people. It suddenly dawned on me that sometimes; the thin line between dream and reality is fear…fear of failure, fear of uncertainty, fear of being caught on the wrong side of history. And beyond this overcast of fear, success waits in silvery brightness.

It is heartwarming to think that Governor Willie Obiano did not give in to fear…that he kept his eyes on the prize and that on account of that, a monument is sprouting out of the soil of Umueri today in his name. In fact, if Obiano had given in to fear, the airport project would have assumed all the attributes of a malaria dream; indistinct, unrealistic and finally…vaporous. But today, Anambra International Airport has moved from rumour to reality. And as we mark Obiano’s 7th Anniversary, we pay a modest tribute to the resolve of purposeful leadership to break free of mediocrity.

In clearer terms, Willie Obiano is currently completing one of the most modern airports in Africa. At 3.7 kilometers long and 60 meter wide, the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri has the second longest runway in Nigeria, next to only Muritala Muhammad International Airport Lagos. But since it was designed and built to enable landing from either side, the runway has a slight edge over Lagos. It is a CAT 2 type of runway with a ground lighting of 270mm.

The airport terminal is designed to accommodate 400 persons. It has three floors fitted with escalators and lifts for smooth and easy movement. It was designed with the possibilities of a future expansion in mind. The Apron measures 300x200m x560mm of reinforced concrete that can take six sizeable aircraft at once. The Apron is serviced by two standard Taxiways that measure 35m wide with shoulders. It also has three ultramodern firefighting trucks and three 6x6 Crash-tender with 770hp. The car park can comfortably take 400 cars. The outstanding thing about the airport is that it will be equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will guarantee a safe landing for airplanes at night. Impressive!

The most interesting thing to note about this airport is that it is almost ready barely one year after construction commenced on the site. Work began on the site in January 2020 but the world soon slid into a dark tunnel when COVID-19 struck. Doubts rose over it like the pungent smell of a cheap Arabian perfume as folks wondered how the dream would survive the global shutdown. But it did. Work went on at the site; day and night, all through the shutdown and the recrudescence of the pandemic early this year. Work is still progressing at a blistering pace. The basic structures are all set. The central access road to the airport which leads to Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has a bridge and a big culvert which have both been constructed. Sooner than later the road will be completed.

Interestingly, against the expectations of some critics, Governor Obiano chose to mark his 7th Anniversary in absolute solemnity even when he has so much to celebrate for. However, when the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo paid him an unsolicited visit, Obiano decided to take them to the airport construction site to acquaint them with the progress of work. Needless to say, led by Prof George Udeozor, the members of Ohaneze were thoroughly impressed with what they saw. They said so in unmistakable terms. Speaking his mind about the airport, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, owner of the defunct Oriental Airlines said “I have been hearing about the airport; but there is a difference between what you hear and what you see. Today, I have seen the airport and I am impressed. As most of you know, I am an engineer. I specialized in highway and hydraulics. I built the Enugu Airport as a very young engineer. I want to say that what Governor Obiano is building here is not for Anambra State but for the entire South East. This is very important.” Chief Iwuanyanwu should know. After all, he was also deeply involved in the building of the Owerri Airport.

The most fascinating thing about the Anambra airport is not just that it is set to blaze a new trail in Nigerian aviation but that it is one airport whose viability is guaranteed even before it starts operations. There is hardly another state in Nigeria that has Anambra’s large number of restless, always-on-their-feet population. These people love convenience. They would rather fly to Umueri than any of the nearby airports. Anambra is the leading economic hub in the South East with 63 active markets and the largest retail market in West Africa located just a few kilometers to the airport. The cargo wing of the airport will meet their needs perfectly. Similarly, at the moment, the leading airline in Nigeria; Airpeace is owned by onye Anambra. He already has place reserved for his airline at the airport. Lately, two other entrepreneurs from the state have also floated new airlines. They are Dr Obiora Okonkwo of United Airlines and Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, CEO of Chisco Group who floated Havila Airlines a few days ago. These airlines are sure to open offices at the Anambra airport. The National Bureau of Statistics also announced that Anambra is the state with the least poverty rate in Nigeria at 15%. This means that many people from the state can afford the slightly steep cost of air travels.

Sincerely, it is difficult not to see that once again, Governor Willie Obiano has shown incredible vision with the Anambra Airport initiative. It is impossible not to accept, even if reluctantly, that things are indeed falling together for Anambra State, under Willie Obiano.

I am sure if the high quality and international standard being pursued in every aspect of the airport, Embraer could eventually be convinced to build an MRO in Nigeria there.

My plea is that since the Governor said last week that all constructions on the Runway will be completed in about 8 days, i hope they really take their time to mark the runway, taxiway and tarmac to international standards.

I trust Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor. He seems to be a bullish type of guy that means to do everything to international standards once he puts his mind to it. With the length of this runway and all the money spent on it, only world class runway markings should be accepted.

I heard that ILS will be placed on both ends of the runway. While that is commendable, i think it would be best to have ILS only on Runway 24 for now. Just because of how much it costs to set up a Category 2 ILS on just one runway alone. A ton of money still needs to be spent on other priorities needed in getting the facility functional this year. There is still A LOT of aeronautical equipment to be purchased, Industrial boreholes with very high overhead tanks to adequately serve both the terminal and Fire station, the airport gate and car park, access roads within the airport etc.

On the last floor ceiling design, i hope they get it right. Although many modern airports leave their iron roofs steel structure as part of the modern "Space Age designs", without covering it up with a ceiling, I hope they will paint the steel bars and the steel roofing sheet white color on the inside, or a bright color to enhance illumination and make sure that the bars are the same color as the roofing sheet in the interior. This will make the last floor roof to be aesthetically pleasing if it blends well in the same color with the steel bars. Like similar modern airports roof pictures below.
