Restructuring Not Nigeria’s Problem – Buhari by PMBNG(m): 8:40am On Jan 01, 2018
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed calls for restructuring of the country stating that it is not the problem with the country.

Mr. Buhari in his traditional New Year address to the nation, however, contended that what is wrong with the country at the moment is not its structure but the process.

Dismissing hopes of restructuring under his watch, the president assured that his administration will revisit the cost of governance, which he admitted is extravagant.

“In respect of political developments, I have kept a close watch on the on-going debate about “restructuring.” No human law or edifice is perfect. Whatever structure we develop must periodically be perfected according to changing circumstances and the country’s socio-economic developments. We Nigerians can be very impatient and want to improve our conditions faster than may be possible, considering our resources and capabilities. When all the aggregates of nationwide opinions are considered, my firm view is that our problems are more to do with process than structure.

“We tried the Parliamentary system: we jettisoned it. Now, there are shrill cries for a return to the Parliamentary structure. In older democracies, these systems took centuries to evolve; so, we cannot expect a copied system to fit neatly our purposes. We must give a long period of trial and improvement before the system we have adopted is anywhere near fit for purpose,” he said.

Sure...you are Nigeria's problem. Tell me why a structure which is based on taking oil from Niger Delta to build your katsina state should be a problem. undecided

Our primary problem as a people is not structure of the country but corruption.

If corruption is not nipped in the bud, come whatever may, we'd never gain considerable traction in our quest for greatness as a nation.

Regardless of the structure, we aren't gonna have aliens from outer space govern us - the same corrupt institutions and political class are those who'd still pilot our affairs.

Therefore, until we put in place stringent measures to punish and preempt corrupt practices, we'd just keep moving around circles.
