Nigeria is a religiously tensed nation. Any slight & light issue concerning religion could easily be overblown by ignorant and sentimental people (and there are quite a number of them). Yet I couldn’t help but notice that there are quite a few more contentious issues than religion. I’ve listed down a few of them.

Tribalism: Tribalism is the most controversial issue in Nigeria after religion anytime anywhere; but I actually feel both are on the same level. Tribalism is the main reason why there is violence in Southern Kaduna (not just religion). Tribalism is the main reason politics in Nigeria is so complicated. Tribalism is the main reason most of us can’t study at the Universities we’d like in Nigeria. Tribalism is the main reason Nigeria is so divided. This deserves a longer discussion, but not today.

The Fulani Herdsmen: Easily another controversial issue today outside of religion in Nigeria. Since 2015, the herdsmen have been on a violent spree. They’ve turned Benue to their own poaching ground, attacking villages, farms and freely murdering hundreds of innocent people. Any talk of arrest or curtailing the herdsmen through laws has led to heated debates and even threats.

But the minute the herdsmen were killed in Taraba, the military was deployed and the perpetrators were being hunted. This issue is now nearly as hot as religion in Nigeria.

I dare you, shout “Sai Baba” in Benue and see what happens!

Biafra: When Nnamdi Kanu rekindled talk of Biafra between 2014 and 2017, Nigeria became extraordinarily tensed. IPOB caused more frenzy than MASSOB had ever made in the last 0 years.

Talk of Biafra greatly caused heated debates and arguments on every medium. And until Kanu ran off, in betrayal to his people, the issue never looked like dying down. Nor has it, as little spark is all that is needed to light that candle.

Ronaldo vs Messi: Ok, am going over to the funny ones, but don’t laugh, because if you crack a careless joke on this matter at a viewing centre, you might leave with a black-eye.

The dispute about who is better between Ronaldo and Messi is a comically tensed one here in Nigeria, and on the internet, it can easily degenerate into a brawl between loyalists.

Wizkid vs Davido: Like it or not, the beef between Davido and Wizkid is an open secret, and let’s not be deceived by them hugging at recent concerts. But the truth is that the beef between this two is more tensed among supporters than between the both of them. Nigerians are constantly, literally psyching, these two to war by debating who is better between them. Every award, performance, record broken, is seen as a testament that one is better than the other.

How people can go crazy over this matter beats my imagination, but people have donated money to churches for universities that they their children will never attend, so it’s normal. Abi?

These are the things we have allowed to divide us in this country:

Politics

Sentiment

Religion

Tribalism

And so we let our leaders get away with crime that ordinary citizens get jail for little of the same offense

Nigerians be wise
