Operation UNICORD

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest_Invasion_of_1967

The Operation UNICORD (July 2 – July 12, 1967) was an offensive launched by the Nigerian Army at the beginning of the Nigerian Civil War. It involved the capture of 6 major Biafran towns near their northern border.

Background
When Nigeria became an independent state in October 1960 the newly formed government consisted mainly of northern politician from the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group. Early on the Nigerian government became corrupt with various politicians swindling public funds and rigging votes. By 1965 the Nigerian government became so corrupt that uprisings against the government sprang up all across Nigeria with various politicians attempting to gain more power. This resulted in rioting and mass arrests in the cities of Lagos and Ibadan. The politician Obafemi Awolowo was falsely blamed for causing the riots and was sentenced to 10 years in a Nigerian prison.
All of the chaos that occurred in the political ralm gave was to the 1966 Nigerian coup d'etat in which 11 senior politicians were killed by mainly Igbo soldiers led by the Army Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. The Nigerian Prime Minister Abubakar Balewa was one of the 11 politicians assassinated during the coup of January 15. Nzeogwu's soldiers were forced to retreat to Kaduna after General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was able to assemble a force of soldiers in Lagos to combat the rebellious soldiers. Ironsi was made Supreme Commander of Nigeria on January 16, 1966 and became the first Igbo head of state in Nigerian history. many northern generals and politicians were angry at Ironsi for two reasons, because he did not execute Major Nzeogwu and because he was giving more and more political power to southern politicians.
On July 29, 1966 Ironsi was assassinated by mutinous soldiers which included William Walbe after they wrestled command from Theophilus Danjuma and installed Colonel Yakubu Gowon as Head of State. The counter-coup resulted in the 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom and caused the brutal massacre of 50,000 Igbo civilians living in various northern cities such as Kano and Kaduna. These massacres angered many Igbo civilians and a inadvertently led to easterns calling for secession. Ojukwu met with President Gowon in Aburi, Ghana in December 1966 to discuss the situation that was occurring in Nigeria. An apparent vote was held by a consultative assembly appointed by Ojukwu, and they approved of a secession of a secular Igbo state. However, it must be said that from all indications the decision to secede had already been made around late 1966 by Ojukwu and his closest confidants which included Louis Chude-Sokei, Christopher Okigbo, and the very influential CC Mojekwu. On May 30, 1967 Ojukwu officially seceded the Eastern Region and proclaimed the new Republic of Biafra.
Ojukwu managed to assemble a 3,000 man guerrilla force to defend Biafra's front lines. In early July 1967 Nigerian President Gowon ordered the Nigerian Army high command to regain control of the Eastern Region.

battle of Ore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest_Invasion_of_1967

The Midwest Invasion of 1967 (August 9 – September 20, 1967) was a military operation between Nigerian and Biafran military forces. The invasion began when 7,000 Biafran soldiers led by General Victor Banjo crossed the River Niger Bridge into Asaba. The Biafran retreat from Ore is considered the turning point of the war.

Background
When Nsukka fell to the Nigerian Army on July 14 President Odumegwu Ojukwu knew that the Nigerian would next set their sights on the Biafran capital, Enugu. After a mission to recapture Nsukka on July 30 failed and resulted in death of Major Kaduna Nzeogwu, Ojukwu began drawing up plans for an invasion of Nigeria's Mid-Western Region in an attempt to divert attention away from Enugu.

Fall of Enugu

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Enugu

The Fall of Enugu, (October 1–4, 1967), was a military conflict between Nigerian and Biafran forces. Enugu was invaded after the Biafran retreat from the Mid-Western Region only 14 days earlier after the Nigerian 2nd and 3rd Marine Division cleared them of the area.

Prelude
When Nsukka fell to the Nigerian 1st and 2nd Brigades the Biafran President, Odumegwu Ojukwu, knew that his capital would be the Nigerian's next target. After a failed invasion of Nsukka on July 30, 1967 resulted in the death of Major Kaduna Nzeogwu President Ojukwu began drawing up plans for an invasion of Nigeria's Mid-Western Region in an attempt to divert attention away from Enugu.
The invasion of August 9 was a tremendous success for the Biafrans and was followed by a sort of 44-day stalemate, before it was broken by the Nigerian 2nd Division's invasion of Ore. Biafran soldiers retreated from the region on September 20, 1967 and fled back to their homeland, pursued by Nigerian soldiers.
The commander of Nigerian troops stationed in Nsukka, General Obasanjo, was relieved of his command and replaced with Lt. Col. Theophilus Danjuma.

capture of Port Harcourt

Invasion of Port Harcourt
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Port_Harcourt

The Invasion of Port Harcourt (March 8 – May 24, 1968) was a military conflict between Nigerian and Biafran military forces.

Background
In the mid-1960s, people from the Hausa and Fulani groups in Nigeria decided to start the Anti-Igbo sentiment against the Igbo people of southern Nigeria, which resulted in the killings of thousands of Igbos and the evacuation of hundreds of thousands more Igbos from northern Nigeria. In 1967, Col.Odumegwu Ojukwu declared that the Igbo people had seceded from northern Nigeria to form the Republic of Biafra.
Soon after the announcing of their secession, the Nigerians took control of many large cities in Biafra, including their capital Enugu
Re: A by verydark: 11:25am On Jan 09, 2018
Occupation

On August 17 Governor Okonkwo installed a dusk to dawn curfew in which only citizens with passes would be allowed to move freely at night. Non-Igbo citizens, especially the Hausa community, were subject to harassment from Biafran soldiers while women were often molested and sometimes raped, this in retaliation for the 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom. Resistance groups began springing up constantly consisting of mainly ethnic Urhobos and Ijaws. Because of a series of uprisings against the occupying Biafrans in Benin City, General Okonkwo began raising a force of loyal native inhabitants to combat the rebels. By August 18 Okonkwo had assembled a force of 780 reliable volunteers to keep natives from attacking or killing Biafran soldiers. Loyal inhabitants donated whatever weaponry they had to the Biafrans, which consisted mainly of single-shot rifles and double-barreled shotguns. Cooks began poisoning Biafran soldiers whenever they had the chance to and it was because of this that Biafran soldiers began only eating food that was cooked by ethnic Igbos or self-cooked. Rebellious natives who did not wish to fight would often seduce Biafran soldiers to get information out of them and tell Nigerian authorities. On August 20 a group of Urhobo/Ijaw rebels raided a Biafran camp and were successful in killing 50 soldiers while 16 rebels were killed in the skirmish. Due to these rebellions Biafran soldiers began raiding and pillaging villages throughout both the Mid-Western Region and Niger Delta inhabited by anyone other than Igbo civilians. The Biafran government began broadcasting Biafran propaganda in the region while the Nigerian government broadcast anti-Biafran propaganda as well. On September 19 President Ojukwu declared Governor Okonkwo President of the Biafran puppet-state, the Republic of Benin, in an attempt to make citizens of the Mid-Western Region loyal to a government other than Nigeria.

Turning the tide
On September 20, while the Biafran 12th Brigade was stationed in Ore, the Nigerian 2nd Division under General Murtala Mohammed attacked the Biafrans and almost immediately forced them to retreat. The retreating Biafrans destroyed the Oluwa Bridge and managed to get a vital head-start in front of the advancing Nigerians. When the 12th Brigade reached Benin City they alerted their comrades and, instead of mounting a defense, Murtala and his troops began looting the city, even stealing $5.6 million from the Central Bank. When the Nigerian 2nd Division arrived in Benin City they discovered the city largely abandoned but managed to find a trapped Biafran unit stationed in the Benin Prison, most of whom were killed while attempting an escape. Meanwhile, the Nigerian 3rd Marine Division under General Benjamin Adekunle began landing in Warri and capturing it along with Sapele and Ughelli. Most Biafran soldiers trapped behind enemy lines abandoned their uniforms and weapons before integrating into the local communities, escaping eastward when they had the chance.

Aftermath
The Nigerian 2nd Division continued to pursue the Biafrans but were stopped after retreating Biafran soldiers detonated and collapsed the River Niger Bridge at Onitsha. On October 7, 1967, citizens of Asaba were forced to leave their homes and attend a public dance in Asaba. When the civilians arrived in downtown Asaba they were massacred by the 2nd Division, under the supervision of General Murtala Mohammed, in retaliation for the assassination of Ahmadu Bello at the hands of Kaduna Nzeogwu one year earlier, this massacre became known as the Asaba massacre. The 2nd Division then invaded Onitsha and managed to capture and hold onto control of the city for less than a day before they were surrounded and massacred by Biafran soldiers.

****************Herdsmen Deserve More From Government************************

The minister of Agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh said this in Abuja on Monday during a meeting on the crisis between herdsmen and farmers.

He said "Over the years, we have not done much to look seriously into the issue of livestock development in the country.

"I am sad to tell you that in the last 50 years until recently, we may have done enough for the rice farmer, the cassava farmer, the maize farmer, the cocoa farmer, but we have not done much for herdsman and that inability and omission on our part is resulting in the crises we are witnessing today.

"In Europe, every cow that is farmed gets a subsidy of 6 Euros per day, we have done next to nothing for the cattle rearers and as a result, their operations have become threats to other farmers."

Ogbeh disclosed that the government is planning a programme called "cattle colonies" as part of efforts to end the crisis.

"At least, five thousand hectres of land would be made available, adequate water, adequate pasture would be made available.

"We also want to stop cattle rearers from roaming about. The cattle will be provided with water and adequate security by the Agro Rangers," the minister added.

On his part, the minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau while speaking during the opening ceremony, said government would not tolerate insecurity in any part of the country.

While noting that it was the function of the government to protect the citizens, he said "the current trend of situation is very bad for the North and Nigeria in general."

He added that the situation will result to food insecurity in the country if not quickly dealt with.

You have to learn to look at the two side of the story instead of the one side the Lagos/Ibadan expressway media likes to dish out.

You said the war was not necessary? So why did Nigeria declare war and come to the East to fight? Why did Nigeria led by Gowon not keep the Aburi agreement signed in Ghana to prevent war? Why did Nigeria not agree to the UN monitored referendum proposed by Ojukwu?

The truth is that Nigeria caused the civil war, but people who dont know Nigerian history think it was caused by Ojukwu. Ojukwu did over and above what he should have done to prevent war. But the one thing Ojukwu was not prepared to do was to submit his people to Hausa/Fulani slavery so as to avoid war and thats why he declared the independence of his people as Biafra.

And so the answer came from the same man who determined the start of the war. When the kitchen got too hot to bear, he simply left!

Ojukwu was a great man who led his people in a war of independence to free them from the colonial shackel of Hausa-Fulani dominated Nigeria. Thats why Ojukwus people love him in death. We may have lost millions of souls in the fight but there is nothing more noble in this life than for one to fight for freedom, no matter what. Ojukwu may not have suceeded but the fact that he rose up and fought back when all others were lining up to lick 'Northern a$$' to avoid war , is commendable. He fought, he lost, but no shame. It is s great and determined people who fight for their freedom against a much greater opponent. Only a fool will expect Ojukwu to stay back and be used for target practice by the Nigerian Soldiers when the war was virtually over. If Ojukwu had ran away in the middle of the war, then you can call him coward. But he stayed to the end and left. Ojukwu would have been very foolish to stay back to be slaughtered when he had a way of escaping.

Ojukwu did not cause the civil war, Yakubu Gowon and his fellow Northerners did.

First, your first quote was my personal opinion. And that was derived when you commensurate cost of the war to its cause.

In your second quote, the article did not say Ojukwu caused the war, it says, Ojukwu determined the start of the war.

In as mush as we all, including your good self and your people are still under the tutelage of the northerners then that war was gratuitous and a

sheer waste of valuable human resources. Ojukwu simply took a mammoth gamble to actualise his inordinate and egoistic ambition but with

other people's lives and when he lost (as was evidently clear from the onset) wasn't prepared to sacrifice his own life for what he sent millions of

his people to the great beyond, for.

Whereas, those who 'licked' northern assss have ended up ruling same northerners, cutting them to size and are seeking more years to rule.
