[quote author=zoba88 post=64214760]Dear Colleagues,
There seems to be an outbreak of lassa fever in Abakaliki,Ebonyi State as we lost 2 Resident Doctors today,Dr Felix Ali,Dept of Community Medicine & Dr Abel Sunday Udo, Dept of Otorhinolaryngology,FETHA..

Dr Felix Ali had complications of Lassa fever & he was taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital,Irrua where he eventually died..

Dr Abel Sunday Udo,operated on a patient 3weeks ago suspected to have had lassa fever and he died this afternoon..
He also lost the patient..

The House Officer & the nurse that joined him in the surgery are presently on their way to Irrua Specialist Hospital,Irrua for exper care... the working condition for doctors and health workers in this country is pitiable...for us @ ISTH. We hope that primary prevention is embarked upon by federal ministry of health as the season for lassa fever comes ( bush burning) less the miniature lassa fever ward be overwhelmed and a general pandemic happens.. God help us!!!

The rate at which people are dying is getting too much, just 15 Days.......Its time churches should go on fasting and prayer.

we've always been on fasting and prayer. what we need is to use our brains

Tomorrow some people will come here and be abusing doctors and we nurses.
You see how the two doctors lost their lives trying to save a patient.
It's worrisome.
May God console their families.

you impressed me today

It is mostly a matter of hygiene and caution.

The victims should eradicate rats on their premises. They should use plastic basins to store their foodstuff.
They should avoid eating vermin.

The doctors as well could have applied more caution by wearing the right PPE, by use of adequate barriers.

You are right the brain is the most useful tool we can have and we should use it .

At the end we must say rest in peace.

Health workers must apply universal safety precautions when handling patients at all time. Nigerian factor will not spare us from death when we do things wrongly. I once left a hospital after several hours of waiting because the doctor used his bare hands to be touching the watering eyes of a patient.

Tears were coming out of the boys eyes consistently, and because the doctor was certain the cause was not an infection, but rather, exposure to a gas, he was using his bare hands to touch and run the fluids from the boys eyes. Let's not forget that the boy could have other diseases. I had to leave because my eye test was next.

Secondly, is it impossible for Nigeria to eradicate and eliminate Lassa Fever, or are we waiting for the white God, Bill Gates to come do it for us? Meningitis, and the others, must Oyibo do everything for us?!

Speechless
Lassa fever strikes, yet again.....in the same hospital where many health workers were killed by same disease 10 years ago including a consultant, a Senior Registrar, 2 Registrars and some nurses, .....the same hospital that commissioned a virology diagnostic centre (Lassa fever centre) 2 years ago but has remained non-functional till date... federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA.

Lassa fever, you've taken a brother (Dr Felix Otu Ali) of Community Medicine department, FETHA, and a Senior colleague in Medical School days (Dr Abel Sunday) of ENT department FETHA.

Why is the government playing games with the lives of her citizens, every life matters, no life is more precious than the other. Health workers are continuously facing deadly diseases every day and to think that the hazard allowance is just N5000 only, is not only ridiculous but a shame, in a country that brags about being the giant of Africa.

Why is the Lassa fever centre in FETHA not functional, everything should not be about politics all the time. ARD should not just be seen to be going on strike on matters that relate to remuneration but issues such as this centre which the government used to hoodwink the masses should be a reason to embark on strike to draw government's attention to it.

It is surprising to learn that despite losing these two doctors in FETHA, the management of the hospital has not seen any reason to close the section of the hospital where these people were initially treated before being transferred to Irua, at least to fumigate it and make it safe for work, rather patients are being transferred to a different ward.. How safe are these wards?.... and some doctors are still working there, risking their lives with no form of protection....

ARD FETHA should wake up to their responsibilities of protecting lives of their colleagues, other health workers and patients as well....

Dr Felix was managed in a mission hospital before being moved to FETHA, when he was first suspected of having viral haemorhagic fever... Bleeding gums, etc.. What has the ministry of health done to curtail the spread of this deadly disease or are they just waiting to attend a mass burial of Ebonyians and start shedding crocodile tears? An entire community is at the verge of being wiped out.

Honourable Maria Ude Nwachi (Afikpo Chic), this is the time to act, the entire Afikpo is in danger, Senator Sunny Ogbuorji, this is not time for politics, your senatorial zone is in danger, Honourable Idu Igariwey, your people are looking up to you.

The government should put health in their priority list and should declare a state of emergency in the health and education sectors otherwise, the current brain-drain will be a tip of the iceberg compared to what is about to happen in the future.
Cheers!!
