The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made further discoveries during its investigation of the fraud relating to the 2015 Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) presidential campaign funding. The discoveries, which include properties allegedly built with proceeds from looted money, were made by the Gombe zonal office of the commission.

Addressing newsmen yesterday at the commission’s office in Gombe, the head of operations of the zonal office, Mr Johnson Babalola, said in the course of investigations and interrogations, some hotels and filling stations built by some beneficiaries of the loot were discovered.

Though the EFCC zonal head did not give details and locations of the properties since investigation was ongoing, he, however, disclosed that three persons had been arrested and would soon be arraigned in court. Babalola further stated that the zonal office of the commission also recovered some items meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) which were allegedly diverted by the secretary of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Danlami Arab Rukuje. “Few weeks ago we recovered some materials donated to IDPs by the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative but were diverted by SEMA officials.

We recovered 1,200 bags of cement out of the 5,000 bags diverted and 500 gallons of Swan paint,” he said. According to him, the key suspects in the case, Danlami Arab Rukuje, Isa Garba and Muazu Suleiman would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded. He solicited the support of journalists in reporting facts, adding that regardless of the challenges the commission was facing in investigating political cases, it was making progress. Listing the achievements of the unit, he disclosed that the zonal office recovered over N266 million last year, handled 202 cases, 26 of which were prosecuted and 10 persons convicted.
