Just like the Mad Max movie, a city on the planet is about to become the first to run out of water due to the drought in recent years. Cape Town, South Africa has less than 100 days left .

Actually, the South African city had always been known as a refuge of abundant natural water. However, a three-year drought in the region around Cape Town has caused levels in its water supply to fall dangerously to record lows.

In fact, experts have predicted that the city will reach Day Zero in which dams will fall below 13.5% of their combined capacity on April 21. If, as it seems, this scenario occurs, all non-emergency municipal water supplies will be turned off, except in the poorest and most needy neighborhoods. Residents will also be required to obtain water from one of the 200 collection sites available in some areas.

The government has warned that on April 21, each resident will have access to an undetermined number of liters per day and plans to deploy armed guards that will prevent water theft.

Meanwhile, the city is working on water recycling projects and the construction of three desalination plants that are expected to be operational in March. Currently they are also applying a water limit per person per day.

Time magazine said that the drought in the city is shaping the thinking of many. For example, the city has asked locals to limit their showers to a couple minutes, stop watering their lawns, no washing of cars, and flushing toilets only when necessary.

Also, the government has started a certainly controversial movement: a live water monitoring map that embarrasses residents who waste water or encourages them to follow the good habits of their neighbors.

Experts explain in their latest study that, there are obvious signs that what happened in Cape Town probably worsened more due to human actions.

The chances of an extreme drought are increasing in the Western Cape region in general. While the wet and snowy years will continue to happen, the area tends to be dry and prone to drought. In fact, research has found that the warmer and drier climate is becoming more common throughout the world.

In 2015, NASA’s satellite data discovered that one third of the world’s groundwater reserves were too “stressed” by human use, suggesting a grim result if society does not learn to use water in a more sustainable way. Cape Town is the first example of such increasingly realistic predictions.
